Delta has been announcing the furloughs one month at a time. Last week they announced an additional 75 for 01 Nov.

Delta has stated they will furlough 1400 pilots. So far, they have not changed that number

The original furlough projection was 1700 pilots. That was reduced to 1400 when there was a perception of a rebound in the industry.

The 1400 number has been floating out there for about 6 months or so. Considering the worsening condtions of the entire airline industry - (Usair BK and potential United BK) - there is a real likelihood of more furloughs.

I think it is fair to say that the entire industry is in for a major restructuring that will impact Delta, United, AA, Continental and Usair the greatest. The low cost carriers will more than likely gain greater marketshare in the coming year.

Actually, it was adjusted downward when the 300 retirements for 2002 were figured in (managenment stated that the origianl 1700 did not include this)

VP Flight Ops has also stated that the 1400 will not change unless there is another force majeur event (like a war with Iraq I'm guessing)

Were the 300 retirements influenced to occur by an ERB offer? Just took a look at the 8-K filing, "To continue to comply with ERISA’s minimum funding requirements, Delta anticipates being required, prior to March 15, 2004, to provide an estimated $100 million to $250 million of total funding to the Pension Plans for the Pension Plan year beginning on July 1, 2002 and ending on June 30, 2003." Sure isn't chump change.
