A story on the radio, with sound bites from several aviation experts.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4804903

US Airways could be rescued by America West.
United—nobody knows—classic situation of too big to fail.
American, Continental, relatively healthy.
In the middle is Northwest and Delta, where the real uncertainty is.
Delta’s credit has eroded so rapidly that the credit card processor is demanding money in advance, rather than 30 days after the purchase, eating into reserve cash.
Also there are worries of early retirements of pilots.
Despite sale of subsidiary airline for $400M Delta will probably have to file BK.
“Delta has a whole host of problems related to aircraft that it doesn’t need, infrastructure commitments that it can’t meet, pension obligations it can’t meet, a lot of debt. I just don’t see a way out.”
No more help from government.
Delta stock removed from S&P today.

Seems like a very accurate synopsis of what is going on in the airline industry.
