Who's flown a 1990ish Mooney M20J or M20M?

TAS? Handling characteristics? Maintainence?

I have flown the J model quite often, average gs is 150kts, doesn't like to be flown slow, power on stalls (to the break) are a little dramatic-keep the ball centered! 10 gph for gas, but beware of the lycoming 200hp fuel injected engine-I had an inflight failure on takeoff, and have several friends who had similar incidents.

As for the M model-its very fast, it vibrates a little more than the K models continental, but they are very fun @ 185 kts avg gs, 19 gph, alt. preselect, and fd.

I own a 1979 M20K231 with the continental TSIO 360 165 kts avg gs @ 12.8 gph!! Very efficient machine and cheap to operate. All mooneys that I have flown do not like to be flown slow.

I was fortunate to get to instruct in a farely new M20J 7-8 years ago and I will simply add that landing can require some planning when you are new to the aircraft. A low time Mooney pilot should really think twice about trying to satisfy approach by keeping the speed up on approach to a short runway! The Mooney is sleek and takes time to slow to down unless you have the speed brake option), add to that the rather rigid design of the undercarriage and you may find that trying to touch down the mains too soon can/will result in a very unsightly/uncomfortable landing.

I have also flown an M20J. I enjoyed it very much! I did my complex aircraft endorsement training in it. If there are any specific questions that you have about it, I might be able to help along with the others that read it.
