Here's a subject near and dear to most airline pilots ... money!

Like most airline/military pilots, I am highly mobile and don't spend much of my time in any one place. For these reasons and others, I am shopping for a "permanent" residence with favorable state taxes.

I'm limiting the search to the southeast and southwest ... there's something about spending time at the lake/beach with bikini clad women ... anyway, I digress. Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina are at the top of my list, but I could be motivated to include other states.

I'd appreciate any information and/or advice. I've got the basic tax rates, but I want to know the details. What does it cost to tag, title, register, renew a car/truck? Any good deals for military? Any raw deals besides the obvious?

Thanks!

Well, I enjoy calling Las Vegas, NV home.

Plenty of beauties to look at if that's what you're looking for. You can go to the pool/wave maker at the Mandalay Bay and enjoy every day of the week!

No state income tax, 7.05% sales tax and property taxes that run less than 1%. A $26,000 car was $210 to register initially and the renewal will be about $170. A little higher than some states, but with no income tax they have to get you somewhere.

Gas prices are a little higher than the average..

Can only speak from my experience in Orlando. Think it was around $200 for each car ("standard" Yankee made cars, nothing fancy) to join the Florida plate club. Around $50 a year to renew.

NO state or city wage taxes :).

Other money wise things to consider are property taxes (if you own), utilities, car insurance, etc.

I pay roughly $155 a month for two cars full coverage, $225 a month for all electric, $25 for water. Property taxes vary by township and area. Roughly $1,000 for every $50,000 in home value. Today, gas is around $1.72 a gallon. State tax is 6% and Orlando added another 0.5% (for the children). If you own a home, pest control costs are a way of life. Can be as high as $100 a month.

Orlando (and probably a lot of your more populated Florida cities) can be a tough place to get around. Too many people and not enough roads. A lot of that is due to dodging water and exclusive gated communities that you can't take shortcuts through.

Regarding the babes, I've been told by my wife there are a lot of them. Wear a FedEx hat and drive a Beemer, won't have to say a word the babes will come crawling on all fours.

NO ALABUMMER...PLEASE

I spit on the day I came back to this place.

IF you want to live with little taxes and low costs then TX is a good choice. Not exactly a pretty place...unless you live in the hill country around Austin or San Antonio. No state tax, 8.25% sales tax, auto registration cost me less than $100 for BOTH cars this year....and lets not forget the best looking women in the country!!!! Yeah yeah, everyone thinks they have nice lookin' women, but no other state really even comes close. Come see for yourself.

Oh yeah, i pay less than $1.60 for gas right now...so if you have a long drive, you cant beat it.

Also....THE BEST BBQ IN THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of churches too...

You can count on seeing chemtrails daily as well...

There, i got religion, BBQ, chemtrails and the original question all in one post.

Bush is from there, too. So there's your political angle. Now, are there any PFT airlines based in TX?

LAXSaabdude.
