This quote from an aviation interview site about a recent ASA interviewee.

Same story here, and I had never set foot in a CRJ sim and went to a "Ma and Pa" 61 flight school when I got my ratings. I don't brag on myself and I certainly wouldn't say that I flew it flawlessly, but I was the only person to make it to Phase II. So..whats your point?
 
The point is that you probably were sweating bullets and us DCA grads were calm and collected knowing that we already knew how to fly the CRJ.
 
Yeah, we'll see how calm and collective you are when you're on your first trip off of OE flying an approach into ORD at night behind a 747 in blowing snow with a 25 knot gusting crosswind. Good luck.

only a DCA grad could confuse knowing how to fly a CRJ with actual piloting skill.

Actually, I happened to have this scenario occur my first day of IOE (in ORD), and it went fine. Academy grads have a very good record at Comair and other places that they've gone to.

Where is all this defensiveness coming from anyways? Why do you take it personally that someone succeded by going a different route than you did? I believe all that the originator of this thread was trying to point out is that the FTD down at the Academy was very helpful to some applicants. I know it was to me at Comair, and my fellow Academy grads that went through the course. That doesn't mean people can't succeed coming from other backgrounds, but with all the nonesense flying around these boards about the Academy (mostly coming from disgruntled students that didn't have the cajones to stick to it), it is nice to see a positive post once in a while.

As for the "flying skill" comment above, it is condescending and baseless. You do learn some decent stick-and-rudder skills when your students try to spin you on a regular basis.

Nothing personal against you or your school bud. Rhoid here is just living up to his username and being a real pain in the arse. If you check out enough of his previous posts you'll see for yourself. I'm nearly convinced at this point that he's just posting flame bait anyway.

My initial new hire class at Comair was 50% academy grads and 50% outsiders like myself. The only knock I had on the academy grads was that they weren't that friendly from the outset. They had all the gouge and us outsiders were S.O.L. After a couple weeks they warmed up to us and my sim partner(academy grad) in the 120 is one of my best friends in aviation.

Actually that exact scenario happened to me on my very first flight in a jet, except the 747 was behind me and not in front - with a very anxious controller urging me on for separation reasons.

It isn't that tough! Don't build it up to be such a huge accomplishment. That's what we get paid to do.

You completely missed the point bud. Being a master in a simulator or a graduate from a well known school doesn't mean much of anything in the real world. Being a proficient pilot on the line only comes with experience. That was my point in a nutshell, it had nothing to do with saying the job is extremely difficult. Also, I'd be willing to bet your palms were pretty sweaty on that first approach in a jet into a busy airport with a 747 up your tail. You may say it "wasn't that tough" now, but think about that really hard...everything looks good in hindsight. Or perhaps you're just a better pilot than most of us. When I did my OE I had 1500 hours in turbojets from a previous job and I still broke a sweat going into EWR with 35 knot wind gusts and blowing snow in an aircraft that I was still getting used to. In any case, it doesn't matter since this thread was just flame bait to begin with. It appears that our friend Rhoid is actually a Riddle grad gone freight dawg....right Rhoid? How are things up in Ohio anyway?

Roid, you sure the captain can fit in the cockpit with your big head??? But you probably think they are just seat fillers anyway cause you've flown a CRJ FTD and you're a DCA grad. It's been said here before, flying is only part of the interview. Being able to fly a four day with you is a huge part and you've already shown that I wouldn't want to.
 
Perhaps the DCA grad performed so well in the interview due to all the pressure from mommy and daddy who paid $100K for their ratings.
