A JetBlue Airbus A320 slammed hard into the runway at Sacramento International Airport on Thursday afternoon, leading to the evacuation of the aircraft by emergency chutes. The aircraft was arriving from an intra-state flight that originated in Long Beach, California. Fifteen passengers were injured after the aircraft's tires caught fire and the cabin crew ordered the plane emptied as quickly as possible. Passengers reported feeling a thud when the aircraft made contact with the runway,but no one realized that an emergency had been declared until they were told to evacuate.
There were 87 passengers plus the crew aboard the twin-engine, single-aisle aircraft that can seat upwards of 170 passengers in an all-economy configuration. A JetBlue spokeswoman said that there was a problem with the aircraft's brakes upon landing which then led to the tires catching on fire.
Most of the injuries reportedly were abrasions and sprains caused by utilizing the slides. Five people were taken to the hospital for treatment and observation.
This is believed to be the first time that emergency chutes have been deployed on a JetBlue aircraft since the rapid departure of a flight attendant at JFK Airport in New York earlier this month. That incident, however, had nothing to do with an emergency and everything to do with a disgruntled flight attendant losing his cool, telling off a passenger on the intercom, and leaving by emergency chute with a couple of beers in-hand.
JetBlue is a ten-year-old discount carrier based in Queens, New York.
