They do it to piss you off. No other reason that that. The whole "I'm in the sandbox in the middle of a shooting war to protect and serve my country" is just a load of bull to cover up the real motive of preventing you from upgrading. Besides, I don't think any airline pays their pilots guarantee (or anything, for that matter), if they are on MLA. They keep their number and thats it.

I'm sure if you asked any of these military guys that are holding you back, they would be happy to provide a scraper to remove the sand from a choice part of your anatomy.
