Well.....

I got a call from a buddy asking me if I knew anything about Midwest Airlines problems and a possibility of a Chapter 7? Now thats the first I ever heard of that and was wondering if you guy/gals had any info on this matter?

Midwest guys/gals..... is this true or just BS?

I realize rumors are like, well "you-know-what"... everyone's got one.

But, I was commuting out of MKE in the middle of the day on Saturday, and I counted 12... that's right, 12 9's and 80's outside the hangar.

I don't know their current fleet count with the new 717's and DC-9 retirements, but aren't there only about 30 jets in the fleet?

That's an awful lot of jets just sitting there, doing nothing.

A Chapter 7 would be shocking, considering they're not in Chapter 11, but it seems like something wierd is going on.

ME folks... can someone indicate some news, and indicate what the fleet count is?

Because Midwest is a "business persons" airline they have very few flights after 1100 on Saturdays and before 1400 on Sundays. This is why this airline got the name God's airline. Last time I was in MKE there were two 9's that were being salvaged sitting in front of the hanger. Since they are taking one 717 a month and their first came in Feb, I would guess that they have around 10 on line now along with 13 80's.

Not a chance of ch. 7 with all the new cash they have on hand from the out of bankruptcy reorg.

aaahhh that makes sense.... I didn't even think about asking my buddy if he had the names mixed up.....

Thank for clearing that up.....

the reason why midex has plenty of aircraft at their hangar.
1. they are selling/sold some of their dc9s.
2. they are configuring md 80s for 2-3 seating.
3. some of the planes are recieving new livery.
Midwest is a small airline and they are trying to stay thay way.the want to be MKEs home town corp. airlne and I beleive they have been some what succesful. they are so conservative when it comes to growth it's not even funny.
hearing rumors that they are in trouble. I do not think they are in trouble more than any other airline. yes they had some financial trouble, but, besides one or two other airlines , who has not. they will keep on doing their thing, probably emerging out of this down turn stronger and survive. they have been around for 18 yrs. most of them very succesful.
they have 10 717 and are reciving 1 every monthy untilmarch ,I believe 2004 then 1 every qrt.

I've been jumpseating on them a couple times a week for the last 6 months or so. Lately the crews have been much more upbeat and saying things are on the mend. as a side note, their new 717s are a sweet ride. All first-class sized seats and you get ffresh baked chocolate chip cookies on each flight, just what a road-weary pilot needs after a 4 day trip! :D :D :D

Rumor, Rumor, Rumor...

Fact,

Midwest Airlines is attempting to sell their corporate
headquarters building in Oak Creek, WI.
They have guaranteed to any buyer, a lease for a minimum
of 20 years. This is the last thing this company has to raise
some cash. Makes you wonder why their stock is doing
what it is. I really hope they recover though.

The only reason they have gone to the 2-3 abreast seating
configuration is because they are now attempting to
compete against Air Tran and all the traffic out of ORD.

Mayor Daley (ORD) recently filed a suit against the Milwaukee
Airport Authority for using the title "Chicago's 3rd Airport".
Daley destroyed Meig's field at his own doing, now he want's
to attack MKE. It's backfired, traffic is up at MKE a whopping
28% from last year.

Frontier now serves MKE to DEN competing against UAL and
Midwest. This is the funny part, Air Wisconsin services Frontier,
and AWAC. Our own company services a company we
compete with...But AWAC doesn't service (Ramp) Air Tran
Jet Connect. Air Tran does.

AWAC operations out of MKE now excede our DEN operations
on daily departures and arrivals.

This industry is so funky and abstract.

I need another Vitamin C tablet. I think I'm going to get
sick.

If you look at Walmart, Home Depot, and others, they don't own their brick and mortar stores they lease them. A smart move.

Midwest is doing the right thing. Get rid of money tied up in a building and getting Brand New Aircraft.

I'm sure you will see Midwest around for years to come. And yes, those 717's are sweet in that 2 X 2 configuration.

More recently I've noticed their flights/ticket lines etc, are not very full. Probably a result of fierce competition at their MKE base. New planes are a good idea, but what are they thinking in terms of competetive strategies...expansion, advertising,....?
What is their long term game plan?

midex

I read above that "they have been around for 18 years" etc...

They have managed to survive, but that was before the little invention called "Regional Jet". Now that every city they fly to has dozens of RJ's and/or LCC's they are getting killed. Even if they match ticket prices, they carry 1/3rd fewer people than the competition due to the assinine 2x2 seating. Managements philosophy of "no decision beats a wrong decision" has repeatedly screwed them out of potential routes and aircraft deliveries. I hope they make it but their "five year plan" has scared dozens of people to bail, me included.

Lately the crews have been much more upbeat and saying things are on the mend. as a side note, their new 717s are a sweet ride. All first-class sized seats and you get ffresh baked chocolate chip cookies on each flight

Will the 190's still serve cookies?

Six years later (based on this thread), the soap opera's almost over. At least Uncle Tim got filthy rich. And, he finally got the lack of an airline that he always dreamed of not having!
