WASHINGTON - A plan being proposed by President Bush would give legal status to foreign workers, including millions already toiling in America's underground economy, removing the fear of deportation but not putting them on a fast track toward permanent U.S. residency.

Where Is the Love?

Come on guys. If this were the Dems they'd be selling it as celebrating diversity. Now that it is the evil Republicans it is buying votes?!!
Bush is pimping off the Mexican votes. In addition, think he is trying to get cheap labor into the country so we can compete against the Chinese (sarcasm, somewhat). Hey Clinton pimped the black vote so I guess all is fair in politics.
No matter what the true motives are behind Bush's proposal, think it will be bad for this country.

hey why is it trent lott makes some offhanded "racist" remark and has to resign while hillary clinton can say whatever she wants with no consequences?

double standard.

I have been impressed with Bush to date but this is from out of left field. It all started with the free trade agreement's concept and further deteriorated with NAFTA.

I think it is too bad that George W believes he need to do this to secure votes. I can't believe he thinks it is good for rest of us who were born and bred here. Maybe I am missing something.

The electorate is closely split and the Hispanic vote - large and grwoing - is upr for grabs. Normally considered to vote for Democrats on economic issues but Republican on social issues, whoever gets a large percentage of the Hispanic vote controls the White House and Congress. With this much riding on wooing the Hispanic vote, both Republicans and Democrats are going to ignore the will of the voters and do everything they can to appeal to this group. The only way immigration can be changed is via a grass-roots, popular referendum.

I think it would be more accurate to say "would give A legal status to foreign workers..."

He isn't necessarily handing out free citizenship and voter cards to current illegals or waiving the process for entry like Clinton/Gore did right before the 96 election. That's true vote buying right there.

It will be funny to see the rabid puppies on the far left and right haggling over this bone in the congress, letting the freak show demonstrate their true colors.

Now all we need is lockdown on our North and South borders and we'd be doin' O.K.

I think I am missing something, too. Maybe it is the fact that he is far less conservative than his base, which at this point, only has the polar oppisite of Howard Dean as an alternative choice. Not much of a choice.

GW comes from a part of the country where Hispanics have long been friends and coworkers, and may feel less vehement about this issue of "illegals" than people like myself, whose father emigrated to the US "by the book", not illegally.

Still, GW promised that he planned to seek a solution that was not a slap in the face to those who have come here the right way.

So, I'll "wait and see".

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) called Wednesday for a major overhaul of America's immigration system to grant legal status to millions of undocumented workers in the United States, saying the current program is not working.

"Out of common sense and fairness, our laws should allow willing workers to enter our country and fill jobs that Americans are not filling," the president said in an East Room speech to members of Congress, his Cabinet and immigrant advocacy groups.

Bush's election-year proposal is designed to win support among Hispanic voters while helping meet the needs of American employers. His plan would create a temporary worker program for undocumented workers now in the United States and those in other countries who have been offered employment here.

Dieterly, don't keep us in suspense...are you for it or against it? Since it is coming from GWB I speculate you are at peace with it?

Sarcasm aside, the part about willing workers coming into this country is commendable. However, the reality will be thousands of people coming into this country for the abundance of handouts. You and I will be paying the price both economically and socially. There will be more takers than givers coming in. Think GWB is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Bush BAD!

Pimping that cheap labor for the South. The same constituency that used the votes of the dead (not Grateful) and illegals to elect LBJ as a Texas Senator.

Now we need a comedian to run for President. A different one.

I think some of you miss the big picture. Those "guest" workers with Green Cards don't vote. They're not citizens. The prime U.S. beneficiaries are those employers who want to hire more Mexicans at $6.00/hr. The immigrants who ARE naturalized citizens DON't WANT the competition, they're trying to get a raise to $7.50! Same for those who already HAVE a Green Card.

And half the Anglo kids at the High School won't take a job at McDonalds because it's "beneath them". They'll just mooch off Mom and Dad for another five years. When I was in Breckenridge CO several years ago, the burger joints had signs begging for help at $10.00/hr for evening shift, plus season lift tickets! 'Course, at ten bucks an hour, you'll have to share a trailer with three others about 40 miles from Breckenridge to afford the rent.....

On the "plus side, I can still get Concrete work done for $3.00-$4.00 sq/ft. A 1400 sq/ft new home for around $100K, and a sprinkler system installed for about $2K. Those are Central TX prices. Prices seem to escalate north of OK.......

The reason is simple: Hillary is the media "darling", and Trent Lott is a big, bad republican.

There are no "actions" to consider.

Does anyone honestly believe that Hillary is any less racist than anyone else? What actions suggest she is racist?

The fact the she opposed Clarence Thomas because he had run away from the democrat plantation is enough for me. She and the democrats will ONLY support balck candidates if they toe the line. Step over it, like a black conservative (their worst nighmare) and you're toast. You can be black, as long as you agree with their agenda.

As a former democrat, I can tell you that the media has never revealed all of what they know about the Clintons. They only publish the public pronouncements, and give them a pass when there is a gaffe like the gas station remark.

Once in a great while, you see some really revealing footage like Bill leaving Ron Brown's funeral: yukking it up until he sees a camera, then wiping an nonexistant tear from his eye, with an entirely new expression. Did you see that footage running on Today, or World News Tonight?

No, you did not see that there.

The fact of the matter

The fact of the matter is the Repubs actually understand that they can't fight three (Afghanistan, Iraq and potentially N. Korea) wars AND simultaneously CUT taxes.

By giving these hombres legal status allows the govt to open another tax revenue source.

Didja ya notice how the IRS is going after those "off-shore" accounts more aggresively than ever...?

Same thing.

Peace.

Mar, that sounds plausible but I speculate the amount of tax revenue brought in will be severely offset by the amount the new "legals" will be taking via guberment handouts. Politicians love to spend your money but act like it is coming from their wallets.
I also wonder how many middle eastern "friends" will now be coming in from the south.

because actions speak louder than words.

midlife,

what actions would those be? hillary was known to treat the white house staff like dirt and vehemently scream and curse at them.

it's sad when the epitomy of feminism is a women who attaches herself to a man and rides his political coattails. i can't wait to discuss this with my in-laws, who are indian, and see what excuses may emerge as they think hillary walks on water and doesn't poo.

i can see why bill wandered. he's the one we should feel sorry for. he lost his best friend, buddy.
