FLYING STANDBY | Mesa looks at Plan B

Mesa Air Group Inc., which operates 59 jets for US Airways under the name US Airways Express, said Tuesday it is working on contingency plans in case the airline goes under. In a conference call with analysts, CEO Jonathan Ornstein praised US Airways for its progress in cutting labor costs but said he's concerned about the future.

"This is something that should have been done years ago," he said. "... The question is, is it too little too late?"

Ornstein said Mesa is not inclined to offer US Airways major concessions in its contract but would instead take a "very conservative approach" in negotiations with the airline.

If US Airways folds, Mesa would likely reduce the size of its fleet, although it is also in discussions with other carriers about flying routes that they might add, he said. -- TONY MECIA

CHQ CEO also asked the pilot union for cuts if US goes under. He then had the balls to mention in his weekly sermon the response by the union. NOT NO, BUT HELL NO!

jo's got his grubby little sausage rolls in all kinds of pies. wouldn't surprise me that if/when usair goes under he goes after slots and gates on the eastern corridor in liu of contract compliance (not that he knows anything about contract compliance)...needs a place to put his 37 operation so he pay the crews at industry bottom wages minus an additional 20%
