Just got back from RGS and the topic of old 590MA actually came up in our war stories....

Apparently 590 was the one plagued with "automatic flap deployment". Yup. Cruising along at 17,000 and 210 KIAS and all of the sudden you get that lifting feeling as the flaps choose to deploy to 35, the config horn sounding all the while. Happened to one of my other former captains and tended to be a recurring problem for a while. Sure has a way of building a reputation, anyway.

PenAir flies Metro's to the Prib's. The Saab's do not have the proper overwater equipment.

The mystery of the automatic deploying flaps on 590MA was solved after a lot of digging...literally. MX finally found some relays under the center pedestal with a sticky brown substance that looked a whole lot like semi-dried pepsi. Seems somebody dumped a cup over the pedestal and didn't bother to tell anybody. Made for some interesting flights though!

Now PenAir is also flying a Saab. I believe it said saomething like Business Express (its painted over), says PenAir now, but still has the long black line down it. I wonder if that one is on lease or did they buy it?

Looks like PenAir is growing and moving along, I wish their competitor would do the same!

Ah, 590MA...The first saab I ever flew. I showed up for oe and told the instructor that they didn't tell us nothing in ground school for a straight B. What engines? What weight limits? Little did I know that this is how the rest of my Mesaba career was going to be. Hell, I doubt if the training department even knew we had a B model.

Big Sky Guys

Would Mesaba hire Big Sky pilots?

I don't think you would want to do that, At some point BigSky will have to be merged into the Mesaba list. There is no way that MAIR holding can seriously exspect Bigsky to turn a profit flying 10 metro liners in Montana.

Something is going to happen we just don't know what or when. I have seen that recectly Bigsky has renewed their EAS contract for a couple more years and are Hiring according to the website.

By coming over to Mesaba you would just be giving up what ever senority you have built at BigSky. If MAIR holdings was planing to shut you down they would have done by now. Something is in the works. The only way for Mesaba to grow outside of northwest system is through the BigSky certificate. With the scope in our new contract you guys can't fly anything bigger than 19 seats with out first merging you onto the Mesaba senority list.

or MAIR could sell Big Sky to some one else (ie Pinnacle) and they could fly CRJ's for NWA. Just one of the many possibilities.
