Local news in brief

October 22, 2007

A Northwest Airlines Mesaba flight made an emergency landing at Selfridge Air National Guard base Sunday after the smoke detector light went on in the cabin.

Flight 3055 from London, Ontario, to Detroit Metropolitan Airport landed safely about 12:20 p.m. None of the 31 passengers and crew aboard the Saad 347 aircraft were injured.

"They didn't smell or see any smoke," said Northwest spokesman Jim Herlihy. "The protocol is to land at the nearest airstrip."

Because it was an international flight, the passengers were subject to a U.S. customs inspection, something Selfridge is not authorized to do, and inspectors had to be sent from Detroit, Herlihy said.

The passengers were cleared through customs about 4 p.m. Northwest sent five vans to the base to bus the passengers to Metro Airport.

Saad 347? Gosh things change fast. I leave, upgrade goes from 7.5yrs down to the pre-employment drug screen. And now you guys are getting fancy new Sa'ad 347s?!? Only the finest in Saudi engineering.

I have a question, I am not judging the crew in any way shape or form, I was not in the airplane and I dont know what was going on. I am just curious as to why the flight diverted to selfridge airforce base when Detroit was only 5 minutes away? Once again, not bashing the crew or anything, I am just curious.
Are you joking?
