UNFORTUNATELY? Try Fortunately! It's a good thing not to be on CNN.

Maybe I didn't catch your sarcasm, but I hope it was there.

I have a question, I am not judging the crew in any way shape or form, I was not in the airplane and I dont know what was going on. I am just curious as to why the flight diverted to selfridge airforce base when Detroit was only 5 minutes away? Once again, not bashing the crew or anything, I am just curious.

Unannounced sarcasm is nothing new to the FI forums :p

Glad everything worked as planned. I wonder if we'll be able to hear what the cause was.

Because fire can do a lot of damage to a plane in 5 minutes...... There are very few emergencies that require immediate attention..... Fire is number one.....

In addition, I believe it is a little more than 5 minutes from Selfridge to DTW..... especially if they were still on the Canadian side....

Man, smoke/fire warnings are the last thing I want to see enroute. There are too many historical accidents where crews try to squeeze too much time or distance from a burning airplane.

It's at least 10 minutes from SANGB, (maybe more in a SF340) and if it was a fire... They could have been a smokin' hole on 17 Mile had they tried for DTW.

This XJ crew did right - land as soon as practical.

I thought that you passed through US customs when leaving Canadian airports. I know the few times I overnighted in Montreal and Ottowa we didn't have to go through customs when we got back into the US.

Good job to the crew for getting it on the ground ASAP.

I've got to agree with the crew. Smoke/fire is one of those emergencies where you point it toward the nearest pavement long enough to land on. Diverting to Selfridge was a good idea, because even if they moved all the heavies out of the way (unilkely) it would still be a good 10-15 minutes at top SF340 speeds to DTW. They could have chosen DET (City Airport), but whatever.

I too am puzzled why the news reported that they had to clear customs. I've never flown from London, ON, but most Canuk airports pre-clear US-bound passengers. Of course, Channel 4 news is the same news that reported NWA was now flying A380s (they meant A330s). They also reported that a DAL-NWA merger was eminent and the new company would be called "Delta Orient".

We aren't pre-cleared out of London or Kitchener. You have to go through customs at DTW with both of those departure cities.

Have you ever been into Detroit City Airport? Surrounded by neighborhoods and a cemetary. Selfridge was by far the best choice, given their location, when the FOM calls for landing at the nearest suitable airport in point of time given a smoke/fire emergency.

They did the right thing.

I'd much rather have trained military fire crews waiting for me and a 9000 foot runway than go an extra few miles to a 5500 foot runway in the middle of the ghetto with who knows what kind of services just so we wouldn't have to deal with military airport issues.... (BTW looks like they arrived around noon and had already repoed to DTW by about 5pm)

Smoke and/or fire isn't something to mess with in any airplane. I'd rather have a v1 cut in ROA than be on fire in cruise.

Only the larger Canadian airports have precleared customs, YYZ, YUL, YOW, YVR ect. The Saabs don't currently fly to any preclear airports so we clear in DTW or MSP.

Good points.

Local news in brief

October 22, 2007

A Northwest Airlines Mesaba flight made an emergency landing at Selfridge Air National Guard base Sunday after the smoke detector light went on in the cabin.

Flight 3055 from London, Ontario, to Detroit Metropolitan Airport landed safely about 12:20 p.m. None of the 31 passengers and crew aboard the Saad 347 aircraft were injured.

"They didn't smell or see any smoke," said Northwest spokesman Jim Herlihy. "The protocol is to land at the nearest airstrip."

Because it was an international flight, the passengers were subject to a U.S. customs inspection, something Selfridge is not authorized to do, and inspectors had to be sent from Detroit, Herlihy said.

The passengers were cleared through customs about 4 p.m. Northwest sent five vans to the base to bus the passengers to Metro Airport.

Saad 347? Gosh things change fast. I leave, upgrade goes from 7.5yrs down to the pre-employment drug screen. And now you guys are getting fancy new Sa'ad 347s?!? Only the finest in Saudi engineering.
