Ahhh, much better. Now things are back to the normal Pinnacle bashing around here.:D :D

That is total crap. I hope like all hell you are kidding about this.

Saying that is like saying, "Our industry promotes sleeping with hotel employees because we are always on the road." Way to give up on personal responsibility.

Then why do we STILL have problems with pilots and alcohol? Even after NWA and now AWA. You can try and compartmentalize and cram it into your black and white box, but it is what it is......

If you have a HIMS rep on your property ask him/her about how alcoholism works.

There is a certain percentage of our population that are alcoholics. Members of professional organizations have a higher percentage. Therefore, generally speaking, the percentage of pilots who are alcoholics is greater than the general population who are alcoholics.

Here comes the sticky part;

How do you view alcoholism? As a medical disease or is the person just a screw up? The law of the jungle types wouldn't pull over to help Lyle Prouse, but after you know his story, maybe you would.

I'd rather solve the problem with emapthy than with antipathy or enmity

I think that a large percentage of people in almost every profession go to work impaired or hung over in the morning.

It is just a bigger deal in aviation.

How many times do you think your latte has been made by a barely-sober 20-something at 8am? A lot, I bet.

This modern world is what promotes alcoholism, in my opinion.

Good question. Ive always wondered how pilots view this issue. If you look at the America West captain in question you can see he has a history of alcoholic behavior. DUI, multiple arrests for drunk and disorderly, and spousal abuse. Was/is he an alcoholic? does he deserve treatment? many folks are quick to bash him, but im sure after an assessment of his drinking, the medical community would diagnose this person as an alcoholic. Our culture (aviation) encourages the use of alcohol. Many folks out there can drink responsibly, but im sure we all know quite a few who cant. Do they have a disease? Do they deserve help? I think so, but until more people become educated about the disease of alcoholism, the moral judgments will continue.

RT and Redflyer,
Don't forget the CPT and the FA were both inside the 12 hour rule as well. They just weren't stupid enough to knock on hotel room doors and throw chairs into the pool. The company didn't can them for what the FO did, the company canned them because they violated the alcohol policy. And my understanding is that it wasn't just 20 minutes inside the 12 hour rule, it was fairly significant.

Not that the info I have is concrete, but I have heard contrary to what you have said. The captain and flight attendant were not drinking inside the 12 hour window. There was some dealings with the union with regards to the captain's official stance on the "drinking vs. time to duty" issue. However, I'm not the final word on that issue. The FO made a poor decision while being aided by a bottle of Jack. Unfortunately, his actions took down two other innocent people with him.

Yeah sucks.

I checked the latest seniority list dated today and yup, both CA and FO are off the list. CA is a cool dude, just had a kid recently. And the FO surprised me with what he did to get arrested. But I guess they had it coming to them. Glad the media didn't get ahold of this one.

The media doesn't care because they aren't a major. Even when a CA at ExpressJet got caught high on coke it didn't make national news. Sad but true.

If this is true, then the captain will get his job back. Captains are not babysitters on the overnights. If they are, I want double my hourly rate every hour I am on an overnight. If I am off duty, then I am off duty, period. As far as the FO's behaviour goes, Mesaba has already set the precednce on how to handle unruly crew members acting up in the hotels pools. And termination wasn't it.

If anyone around XJ on this board has been around long enough they'd remember the "drinking incidents" in FOD and DSM. :o Our record is far from clean....

This is true. Apparently at XJ, we go out ragin': Shootin' off fire extinguishers, bangin' on hotel doors, chuckin' patio furnature into pools. Nothing but rock stars over here I guess... ;)

I got high on life on my last three day. No one noticed, then.

Maybe I should start grabbing people's asses as they board. then I would be sure to get some attention.

Overs, did you move up a number because of captain nose candy?

Sincerely,

B. Franklin

You never know. What seniority?

Has anyone seen any mention of this in the newspaper?

No and you won't because 1) We're not a major 2) even if we were a major, the crew never reached the airplane so there was no "situation" at the airport 3) the mainstream news media has bigger stories to cover like the shark attacks (ooooooooooo), the BTK killer, and whatever rhetorical political B.S. topic is on the stove this week.

Slightly off the subject, but heard this on the frequency a couple of days ago. There is a KEGGS intersection on the LOUPE4 DP out of LAX. The departures were getting a little backed up, so the controller cleared an America West flight direct to KEGGS, someone on the frequency said, "don't encourage them"

I have to admit, it doesn't sound right as I'm reading it, but it was PRICELESS!
