Plane collides with ramp equipment at Sky Harbor

A US Airways Express plane is being repaired after a strange incident on the ground at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. Flight 1957 from Guymas, Mexico had returned to Arizona with 13 passengers and a crew of three.
As the DeHavilland Dash 8 was taxiing to the international arrivals area of terminal four about six o’clock Monday, one of its propellers struck a ground power unit and sheared off.
The plane is operated by Mesa Airlines. Company spokesman Paul Foley said no one was injured.
Ground power units are small generators parked on the tarmac that provide power to aircraft while parked at gates. Foley said the pilot was being guided into position by ramp personnel when the accident occurred.
It is too early to determine how the plane and the power unit collided. A National Transportation Safety Board representative was on scene to conduct a preliminary investigation.
The plane has been taken to a repair area to replace the propeller and fix an engine cowl.


Just glad no one was seriously hurt. Heard that parts were all over the place.

Becareful out there. Remember the experience of many of these ramp folks is nill due to crappy pay and high turnover.

Had one try and park me into a gate and the carrier on-luggage cart would have hit the prop if I had continued to follow his directions.

They do now, on at least one of their planes.

I am surprised this never happened in my time at MAG. The ramp in PHX is one big clusterfsck. Rampers used to weave baggage carts, gpu's, airstarts,etc in between planes all the time. Not saying thats what happened here but I figured it was just a matter of time. The turnover there was ridiculous, 75% of the ramp was orange vests (trainees) at any given time.
EDIT: From the pic on the news website, it looks like the plane was arriving at gate B24 or B26 one of the Intl arrival gates (flight was coming from GYM) it was not uncommon for them to marshal planes in without wingwalkers down at those gates due to their low staffing levels. (at least in my exp 3+ years ago)

That looks like a real mess. You know, it is amazing that no one was seriously injured or killed with all that prop shrapnel flying around the ramp.

WOW, I just saw the pictures. A Ramper has them in the Crewroom in CAE.

Prop Done, Engine Done, GPU totally Done. That plane isn't gonna fly for a long time. I was shocked by the damage and the fact nobody was killed. One blade flew over the plane and landed 150' away.
