Once this all shakes out 2 years down the road how will this play out for the non-legacy airlines?

Such as:

SWA, AAI, JBLU and the likes.

Any thoughts?

The market share balance will be restored. The legacies will once again have pricing power and the hammer needed to keep the LCC's in check.

Oligopolies are are good thing for stability.

And by the time the full force of three legacies in America is complete, SWA will be out of the energy futures business.

not gonna happen... sorry

Hi!

CAL/DAL will announce soon.

SWA WILL merge with someone. Probably AirTran.

When open skies 2 is passed, American will try to merge with British Airways for the third time. With the new laws allowing a lot more foreign investment/ownership, it might actually pass some day. If American and British Airways did combine, they would have a truly global network.

I'll say this for the hundreth time - either deregulate the industry or re-regulate it. Companies should be allowed to merge if they want. They should also go out of business if they fail. The market cannot balance itself if the governement keeps interferring.

It seems that the goal of our government is to keep the industry in a perpetual state of turmoil so that Jethro can keep buying $99 tickets. If a couple of companies would go under and the rest combined, we could have at least a little stability. Maybe then we could charge a fair price for our product. In other words, charge at least the cost of the fuel.

Southwest's Ceo said they will jump in and look to merge in 2008 if other mergers occur. He also said that different fleet types would not be a deal breaker. Now that Delta and Northwest have announced their merger, the dynamics of the industry will change. Does that mean AirTran and Southwest as a potential merger? Well, I would say it is possible. Boy this will be one heck of a summer watching all this play out.

I've always thought mergers were only good for top senior managers, banks, lawyers etc..

It's never really about the consumer, let alone the employees.

So in a few years after all the cash is handed out, all these start up companies will grow and we'll be right back to where we are today.

Well that's just great, cuz where I am today blows...from a financial stand point anyway
