USAPA members hope for a merger as another dubious way to vacate Nic- but it won't work like that- Nic IS the USAIR list and Alaska or American would be integrated into Nic.

Ironically, I believe a merger is the only thing that will get the USAIR mess straightened out. The additional 1400 AK pilots would tip the scales on USAPA- sorry, but easties aren't that unified after so many years of Loa 93 - and it would be the mother of all kharma to have AA get you- those 10,000 pilots would eat you like pumpkin pie after Christmas dinner.
And easties would be better off than what they're doing to themselves.

How do you reconcile any USAir merger with the fact that they carry too much legal baggage for anyone to want to infect their airline with? Even though AMR could do as you say, they still would get dragged through court for the foreseeable future by USAPA.
