Wave, you have some pretty thought out posts (except the one you called me a troll on). How do you reconcile any USAir merger with the fact that they carry too much legal baggage for anyone to want to infect their airline with? Even though AMR could do as you say, they still would get dragged through court for the foreseeable future by USAPA.

Not exactly. If there was a merger, a representational vote is required. Do you think American Pilots, West Pilots and East Captains are all going to vote to dump APA and choose USAPA?!:laugh:
ANY merger and USAPA is DOOMED. How many Easties would have voted for USAPA 4 years ago if they knew they'd still be on LOA 93 for a minimum of 7 years longer than they had too....only to end up with the Nic. award?
Let's just get some things straight...
1. It's ALASKA not ALASKAN damn it.
2. Delta Airlines relationship with Alaska is well beyond a normal code share. There has been a lot of money spent/made between the two...Delta's route network depends heavily on Alaska's feed on the West Coast that would cost millions to replace. Delta's first choice is an independent Alaska. Any attempt of another airline to acquire Alaska would trigger a bidding war with Delta. Couple capacity-to-pay with lots of money already at stake and Delta would surely win any bidding war.
3. American Airlines route network also depends heavily on Alaska's feed on the West Coast that would cost millions to replace. American also has a large interest in seeing that Alaska remains an independent carrier. Any attempt of another airline to acquire Alaska would probably trigger a bidding war with American entering the fray.
Therefore...there is ZERO chance that Alaska would ever be taken over by US Air. IF US Air were to attempt a takeover of Alaska, Delta and American would be instantly compelled to make even higher bids. Since they both have much deeper pockets and much more at stake there is no way US Air could win the bidding.
The only way this could happen is if the Alaska was the surviving airline with lots of assurances going to American and Delta that the code-shares would be left in place. That would be Alaska buying US Air, which is not what this thread was about. Right now Bill and Brad are the rock stars of the airline world, I don't see them risking the apple cart.

Alaska would not be the surviving airline, but they would be the acquiring airline. Even though Alaska has a better reputation the US Airways name and certificate is more valuable because of the brand recognition. Not many people from mid America east know who Alaska Airlines is. International? Alaskan Air who? Would likely be some kind of a reverse acquisition, I guess you could call it. Although I'm sure the management team would call it a merger. Not to worry, probably not going to happen.

But I don't control airlines. Remember, geeks bearing calculators thought independence and skybus were good ideas. USAPA is exactly what happens when militant lines in the sand are drawn.
So you're right. I just wish some event would happen to get USAPA members to regain their mind and stop undercutting the industry.

True statement there, the numbers crunchers can and do plenty that may line their pockets but not be in the best interest of the long term viability of an airline. I'm pretty blown away by the path USAir has been on, I guess since Wolf was CEO. They seem to be the victim of irrational labor groups feed by crappy management that has created the perfect storm there.

Yeah,and Alaska cheaps out on Douglas elevator trim jack screws,but I won't mention it...DOH !
US AirWAYS used to paint US AIR on the tails of their airplanes. So I think it's okay to say US Air...damn it.

I really can't think of a time I have ever heard anyone refer to US Airways as US Airways. US Air is pretty much all I hear.
