I have a general question about doing contracting for an overseas operator.

What is the best recommendation (or standard practice) for obtaining normal medical/dental insurance if you're doing contracting for an overseas operator, but you are a US Citizen? Are most independant contractors buying medical insurance from US companies? How does this work? Anybody have any experience or advice as to the best way to approach/handle this?

My concern is getting sick, having a tooth filling explode, or having some other unplanned ailement (broken arm?) where I would need medical insurance. What's the best way to cover bases on this?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

where are you planing to go?
I know Europe well and as far as minor medical or dental treatment, things are cheap. A visit to a doctor is around 20€ and a dentist, 30 to 40€.
What you need to do is to get an inssurance in the States that offers rapatriation. That way is something bad happens, God forbid, you'll have a plan B.
Without a medical coverage from an employer, that could be a way to do it, if you're not planing on coming with your family!

Thanks for the info Redeye69. I think that I've found a provider after doing some reasearch. I went to an expat site and saw an advertisement. This outfit will cover worldwide medical coverage as well as service back in the US. They also have a repatriation/airevac clause too. All in all, it's cheaper than COBRA...by a significant amount.

Thanks,
