Okay, I had my First Class Examination on August 8th 2001; & I'm not even close to being 40 years old.
I don't have my FAR/AIM with me so tell me if I'm right on the following.
1. After 6-months it turns to a Second class Medical.
2. After another 6-months, (12 total) it's a Third class for a remaining 24-months.

So if I'm right about the FAR, my medical is good for a total of 3 years, or until August 31 2004 correct?
Thanks in advance,

Yes, you're good for the 36 calendar months.

But, just a minor "nit". Your 1st Class Medical doesn't "turn into" another type. The print on it doesn't suddenly morph. It's still a 1st class medical certificate. It still reflects that at the time of the examination, your health, vision, etc were within the parameters for a 1st class. As as the dates change, the operations the certificate can be used for change.

The easiest way to explain this is that you have a 1st class medical. But the privs you can excercise change. So after 6 months you can only exercise the privs that require a 2nd class. Then after 12 months total you can only excercise the privs that require a 3rd class medical. Then after 36 months you need to go to the AME.

Easy answer

If you look at the back of your medical it gives you the "Conditions of Issue".

Because you obtained a First Class Exam, read the explanation under subpart a.

Because you're under 40 the certificate is valid for a period of 36 months. Of those 36 months, 6 months is valid for use for operations requiring a First class medical certificate. After that six months has passed, your certificate is valid for use requiring a Second class medical for the next 6 months. Total of 12 months. After 12 months pass, your First Class certificate is valid for operations requiring a Third class certificate for the next 24 months. Total of 36 months. Once you hit 40, the life of the certificate is 24 months.
