Mechanic/pilot jumpseat??

I am a A & P mechanic with my Comm. Inst. MEL certs. Is there any way for someone like me to jumpseat. I work at a Cargo operator?? Thanks

I don't have a reference, but ATA told the pilots that there is a new FAA directive that prevents mechanics from occupying a cockpit jumpseat unless they are listed there on the release, and then only if on company business. Off line mechanics can forget it, as at least our GOM prevents them from traveling on jumpseat authority.

Until proven otherwise, take this with a grain of salt. ATA is negotiating with their mechanics as we speak, and this could be some kind of testicle squeezing manipulation.

Only currently employed FAR part 121 airline pilots can jumpseat on other carriers; and only in the back for now. Hopefully We'll get the "jumpseat" back soon. I heard TSA wants access to our jumpseat. I will never allow TSA in my jumpseat if I can help it. Jumpseating is a privilege hard earned by airline pilots and one of very few left.

TSA in the JS? No way! The idea is to keep as many people out as possible, so I can't see how TSA would be a good idea to let in. I'm against it.

What I meant to say was security issues are what will keep mechanics from the jumpseat, same as what keeps pilots out of others jumpseats (like Fed Ex and non-codeshares, for instance).

As an A&P I do take offense and was'nt it a pilot that tried to take out a Fedex crew and the aircraft and was it not the pilot that took down Egypt Air flight?

Right you are. That was an offensive remark. As far as I know, mechanics can ride in the jumpseat of their own airline, but not anyone else's.

As far as the pilot taking out the Egypt Air and trying to take out the Fed Ex - I never said pilots can't go looney too.

I'd love to have you guys on my jumpseat, I was just posting why I don't think it'll happen quickly.

Mechanics in the Jumpseat??? Not unless required to perform some maintenance function....(Common during Round motor days, to parallel generators or observe pilot reported vibrations) I know, because I was a mech and did it. These days, such cases are rare, and therefore a jumpseating mech is not needed. I used to fly a lot of MAC trips around the world, and we carried a mech because of the far off and funky places we went. Mostly they ate a lot of the catering, and slept. When not sleeping, they sat with their dirty boots up propped up on a sidewall, and smoked. When the A/C did have a mx issue, they complained of no parts(true) and would simply DMI the problem, if possible. Hell I could have done that. When the A/C broke hard, It was usually beyond the capabilities of one mech. So if a mech needs to ride, go home and put on clean clothes and shoes, get a pass and hop in back.

I just put on my asbestos underwear, go ahead and flame away....
