Is an MD-90 the same thing as a B-717?

No,the MD-90 is a much heavier aircraft. It is more similar to the MD-80 series aircraft where the 717 is similar to the older DC-9 series of aircraft.

I really enjoyed my time flying the MD-90. It's a great airplane and handles very well.

Never mind, I answered my own question.
So the real question is why does Embry-riddle use an MD-90 sim with a glass cockpit, and why do they issue an MD-90 type to someone with 500 hours total time? Sounds like a waste of money to me.
 
You can tell all this...

...just from flying the simulator, huh?

No offense, but I'd put a little more stock in a Delta guy or someone who's actually flown the real aircraft. I don't doubt that it is a nice aircraft to fly.

Then again, what do I know...

I think that sim Riddle has now was the one at FSI Long Beach made specifically for Saudia. If it is that one it has a comepletely different cockpit than any other MD-90 out there, except the ones that Saudia flew. They have the MD-11 flight displays, MD-80 FCP, and MD-11 Style Overhead. I think McD called it the MD-90EFD. I got a little stick time in that sime before they moved it. Pretty nice setup.

The MD-90 sim at Riddle is from Flight Safety Boeing ( Alteon ) and last housed in the FSI building at the Long Beach airport. It is as T-Gates says, one of a kind built specifically for Saudia. Actually, it is the original design for the MD-90 with 6 glass displays arranged horizontally across the panel. When Delta became the launch customer they wanted a two day transition from the MD-88 so McDonnell Douglas changed it the common version to an EFIS flight deck and overhead more similar to the MD-80 series.

As a former Boeing, Saudia line check airman, and Flight Safety Boeing instructor on the aircraft, both MD-90 and MD-90EFD, I'd be happy to elaborate further but got to go to Rome now.

No kidding. Jesus H. I feel old, and I'm only 58. EFIS? MD-90? Holy cow! Who cares?...........Have we all forgotten how we got here? Do we all still have the same thrill of flight?..............Times have changed, and I know this, but somehow I miss the aroma of the grass runway, the cone of silence on a range leg approach, the transmitter that only has 27 frequencies..........Maybe this should be a new thread.

I can't talk about range leg approaches, or 27 frequency transmitters, but it's not forgotten. I watched the sun go down last night over central Texas from 14K', and it was just perfect. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to be doing what I was doing. The experience would be the same whether I was flying a Cessna 150 or a 777.

It's about the flying. Not the avionics or the type of fuel we burn. The flying. I admit that I sometimes lose sight of that, but it only takes one night like last night to put it all back in perspective.

It's a marketing gimmick. They claim it will prove to prospective employers that the pilot is up to "airline standards". Oh, and it's not an MD-90 type...it's a DC-9 type(which encompasses the MD80 and MD90 series, DC9, and 717).

EL CORRECTO .............It is about the flying. Flying is a way of life. It is who you are. The equipment is bullsh$t. ...............Amongst others, I remember one day in an old twin beech (old and twin beech are redundent) weaving among the tops of some building cu's. The tops touched hands and turned golden with the sun. A tunnel. Flew through the tunnel. ...............Screw the EFIS.

Got ya beat there....last night, I watched the sun go down in Florida....with good friends....from a lounge chair....beer in hand(and a few more in the belly)....and the steaks almost done on the BBQ... :p

The flying is great...but there are definitely things I would rather be doing much of the time..

True that FracCapt - but as much as I like drinking beer from a lounge chair, I don't get paid while doing it! If I'm gonna do something to put money in my pocket, it might as well be flying an airplane.

Yea, I can see you now. Just kiddin. I'm with you. My Dad flew in the 40's and talks about that stuff some times. It was a diff. time.

OK...if the hair-splitting definition of "full" is all that critical to this discussion, you are correct. The MD90( and -88) do have some round flight instruments. But, for the purposes of the original question...close enough. It didn't seem the kid didn't want a "full" ground school dissertation, but rather just the gist of it.

The MD90 is 1st gen, (1/2 EFIS). It has EADIs and EHSIs with round dials for AS, ALT, RMI etc.

The A320 and B717 are FULL EFIS.

Since when are 3 sentences and a link a dissertation?

And if it matters....My favorite past time is taking my son out in our taildragger to a BBQ restaurant on a 2000' grass strip.
