What's the story with this bill? I understand it's supposed to replace the current labor relations with baseball type arbitration. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks,

Chunk

An attempt to get around the "Railway Labor" Act.

I belive there is a better explanation at alpa.org.

Freight Dog,

What makes you think it will go through? It was read into the Senate on August 2nd LAST year and has been sent to committee. There have been no hearings on it and the 107th Congress is weeks from ending its session. I'm betting it dies in committee.

Fill me in. I'm all ears.

Are you referring to the change of control in the Senate? Recognize that because it will happen in the 108th Congress, the bill has to start over again. The Republicans have had control of the Senate in the past and it didn't happen. Is there some reason why it will now?

My position was that the bill that is in the 107th Congress, which soon ends, is dead.

I would bet that the bill has a very good chance of passing now that the republicans have control of the senate and White House. Bush has made it very clear that he will not stand for strikes of any kind in the airline business. He seems to have outright disdain for unions and here is an easy way for him to not have to deal with future labor disputes. It seems like every other day the USA Today has some letter in print condeming airline labor costs. I am guessing that there were no hearings on the bill when it was sent to the comittee because they were controlled by democrats who rely on the union vote. Now that the Republicans are in control I would think that the next version of the bill will get quite a bit of attention. I hope I am dead wrong.

Lame Duck

And because two of the senate elections were "special elections", the lame duck side of 107 th congress will be republican majority with democrat leadership.
