Hey, all,
I've been searching around and can't seem to find it:

Is there a max number of seats designated in the type certification of transport category aircraft? Or any other category for that matter?

Thanks!

Yes, it is listed in the Type Data Certificate: for the Boeing 737

http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_G...856491F73633D94C8625761C006612DD?OpenDocument

Go to page 33 for the 737-900:

IX. Model 737-900 (cont’d)
Maximum Taxi Weight (MTW) 174,700 lbs.
Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) 174,200 lbs.
Maximum Landing Weight (MLW) 147,300 lbs.

Maximum Zero Fuel Weight (MZFW) 140,300 lbs
.

Model 737-900 Eligible Serial Numbers:
737-9B5 29987-30002
737-9GP 35713
737-9K2 29599-29602, 32944
737-95R 30412, 33740
737-97L 33644-33646, 33648, 33649
737-924 30118-30129
737-990 30013-30019, 30021, 30856, 30857, 33679, 33680
Minimum Crew
for All Flights: 2 (Pilot and Copilot)
Maximum

Passengers: Passenger only mode 189

BUT - there is also the type of seating involved. For the emergency evac requirement - less seats can be normal (approved) the manufacturer can and some do the evac certification but if the operator changes the seating it can cause a new evac demonstration. So you cant go over the max seating in the Type Data Certificate but it can be less.

Or if you want to look at other aircraft sheets:
