I was wondering if anyone is working on a masters degree while flying. Is it feasable to do? I find myself having a lot of time on my hands that I would like to put to good use. Any insight is welcome.

I do my MBA-Aviation at ERAU. I work all week as a CFI here and don't have much problem doing two classes at a time. I also have a second job and an infant daughter, so I'm sure you'll be just fine. They have an online version which is really not bad at all. Check it out at www.erau.edu. OK? Have fun...

Thanks for the info. I'm at an airline so the on-line thing might be an option. I have a degree from ERAU so I am looking for something non-aviation related. Good luck down there.

I was able to complete my Masters on-line while working as a regional FO. I had the first half completed on campus and then finished with 2 classes per term. Was very simple to manage.

Yeah its possible to get a masters. I got mine while I was a CFI. An MBA in Finanacial Engineering from Berkeley. Berkeley offers weekend MBA courses and the MFE can be completed in one year.

You have to have had at least a 3.5 GPA or above to be competitive the minimums are 2.0 GPA during your undergraduate years. It doesn't matter what undergraduate degree you majored in as long as you have a solid background in Statistics they also offer remedial classes in Statistics in case you don't. It's pretty expensive when I was attending in 2000 it was $1100 a unit. Each class is worth 3 units except for all your analytical and statistics classes which are 5 units. All you have to do is maintain a 3.0 GPA total during your MBA studies.

It's pretty competitive to get in but its well worth it. I got a job as a portfolio analyst after graduation. Then I switched to being a part-time CFI. The portfolio analyst job helped pay for all my loans that I incurred in college and my flight training I also had money left over to buy a house! Then I got a job flying for a regional and am now back in debt! But I don't regret getting my MBA or leaving my Portfolio Analyst job one bit.

I was thinking about Finance myself. I did pretty well in college overall GPA of 3.8. I havnt been doing a lot of math since then however. Is there a place that offers a full on-line curriculum and what GMAT scores are competitive?

I don't know about an online curriculum for Berkeley. Check out their website at www.haas.berkeley.edu I just looked at the webiste and it looks like MFE is a pretty hot degree. When I was going there nobody knew about MFE. It was a pretty new degree back in 2000.

I think the average was 700 on the GMAT which is somewhere in the 95th percentile. I think as long as you score somehwere above the 80th perecentile and have a good undergraduate GPA and do well in the interview and Essay you should have a good chance to get in.

The two letters of recommendation from people who can attest to your abilities in quantitative skills is new. I never had to do that one to get in. They probably did that because there are too many people who wash out.

I know a friend of mine who works at Charles Schwab who got his Masters of Science in finance online from Golden Gate University. www.ggu.edu or try this one

got a MS in Aviation Safety from Central Missouri State, 32 credit hours to finish at approx. $220/credit hour. No entrance exam, no thesis, just a exit exam. Not sure but you may be able to do some of the work through U of Phoenix online.

I have been recently looking into getting my Masters as well. I have found that many colleges have weekend programs where you meet every other week. Some have weekday night and weekend courses as well. Seems like it would be very manageable.

In case you do some of your work in a traditional classroom (not aviation related) be sure to discuss your work schedule with a counselor and the professor so that accomodation can be made prior to enrolling. Most graduate level institutions understand normal work situations but many do not understand the nature of airline scheduling and getting stuck away from home during a final could mess your grade up. If you discuss it ahead of time most good schools will work with you.

Wahoo250,

Currently working on my MBA at www.ncu.edu Here you can do it all 100% online. They are an accredited university as this was a requirement for my company to reimburse the costs. It has worked well I am on my 5th class out of a required 12 to get my masters. I do most of the work on my downtime in hotels. Give it a try, better than flipping the remote on layovers.

Good luck!

Did you get that degree online?

Almost done!

I am finishing up a "dual degree" program with ERAU. It is an MAS Degree in Airline Operation's and Airline Management (it takes additional hours for a dual degree). I am not really sure what I will be able to do with the degree but I do have a place on the "I love me wall" to put it. It is presently $1000 or so per class (3 hours) and you need 10 classes plus a GRP, Graduate Research Project (36 hours for a dual).
I have been able to maintain a 4.0 for the last 10 classes BUT!, I have been told that if you take the "on-line" course it is much harder and much more work, it will be very difficult to get an "A". Maintaining a 4.0 is a big deal for me and I found that I could not take the classroom courses at all when working with an ASA schedule. I am only able to finish it up as I am on MLOA and go to class at night.

Maybe someone here can explain their experiences with the on-line system. Some people swear by it as it is their only means to complete their dreams. What ever your means, GET YOUR DEGREE if you have the time and the financial ability. It wont help you as a pilot, but it could help you if you become a non pilot! You never know.;)

I'm doing my degree through Delta State also. It's a master of commercial aviation degree through their school of business and its all online. Save your money and check out this degree. Only $150 per credit hour and 30 credits for the degree. They waive all of the out of state tuition fees for online work. Manageable while working at a regional. Out the door with your degree for $4500 bucks.

hey you guys gave some great information, I appreciate it. I'm going to check out a couple options that were posted here. I'm almost off reserve so I'm probably going to wait until then. one more question...are these rolling admissions?

Heyas,

I did my MS through ERAUs extended campus while I was a regional FO. I could have gone to one of the extention campuses because there was one at the AF base where I lived, but the do-it-yourself way worked much better for me.

ERAU is spendy, however...

Honestly, do it for personal improvement, but I wouldn't count on many brownie points if you are looking for a flying job.

Nu

no brownie points needed for a flying job. I'd be doing it as a safety net for later in life if i need it.

Back to the subject, I guess this is a good book http://www.sportys.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&did=19&product_id=596
but it is heavily aviation related I think.

I have heard for online degrees and getting credit for flight training plus cleps the places to go are http://www.uvsc.edu/ and http://www.dwc.edu/

Hope this is somewhat helpful, you guys think hi res is 2084x1024 but for me it was 320x200 16 colors. Anyway - I don't care - you guys are all great.:)
