Manifold pressure vs. RPM question

I was hoping I could tap into the vast knowledge on this board. Question is this.. What is manifold pressure? Never flown a controlable pitch, but will be soon. I know you set a certain RPM and control the prop pitch for power, but is there anywhere I can go to get an in depth explaination of what is actually happening?
