Looking at some of the news coverage of NWA buying Mesaba I've noticed that they there is talk of an undisclosed side deal between NWA and MAIR to help get the deal done. Does anyone else think that it has something to do with the MAIR letter? In order for MAIR (and their investors) to agree to sell of the only part of their business that makes money there has to be some incentive.
Northwest tells MAIR that they'll get rid of the MAIR side letter. Northwest/Mesaba then come to the XJ pilots and tell them that they can have 36 CRJs (and maybe 36 EMBs) if they dump the MAIR letter. Or something that is more Northwests style. Nothwest/Mesaba come to the XJ pilots and tell them that as part of the sale of Mesaba to Northwest, Northwest agreed to get rid of the MAIR letter or pay MAIR xxx dollars. Since NW and Mesaba are both still in BK they can't aford to pay it. They pilots are given a choice. They can let the letter go, or pay they fee to MAIR with more pay cuts at XJ.
the way i heard it that MAIR was offered one of two options, sell Mesaba to NWA or it cancels the Saab contract. It is rumor, but sounds good. OH, and even if NWA asked to get rid of the letter, nothing short of a NWA seniority number would any pilot vote to be rid of the letter
