i subscribe to Flying and Plane and Pilot, but I was curious: what other aviation-related magazines/periodicals are out there that you pilots subscribe to? i'm looking to find new periodicals to keep me occupied that are related to airlines, general aviation flying, and planes in general (i tend to avoid military, experimental, and ultralight-type reading.)

I've never read P&P, but Flying is and always has been aimed more at the avocational flyer and the "fence hanger" who is thinking about taking lessons- it's full of ads for flight schools and PFT schemes. Flying's editorial staff has gone downhill too. There are too many columns by Peter Garrison droning on about one of his cross-countries and Les Abend explaining again just what an amazing pilot he is. There are still good columns and articles, but you don't get much for the price.

AOPA Pilot is a great alternative to Flying. The issues are bigger, and there are more articles and columns aimed at both recreational flyers and professional pilots in training. If you join AOPA, make sure you are getting the version of Pilot that has the "Turbine Pilot" section. I think there are two versions of the magazine printed, and the Turbine Pilot articles have some great information, both for pilots who are currently on turbine equipment and those who want to eventually move up.
AOPA is a great advocacy group that every pilot should be a member of anyway. Their magazine is just the gravy!

Seems to me the target audience for Flying is the rich business type or hobbyist... whatever you call 'em, the really rich dudes. Check all the ads for new Cessnas/Caravans/Citations, TBM 700s, PC-12s, Cirrus', etc., plus the high dollar avionics ads... who can afford stuff like that? Not me.

And speaking of tools, how can you mention Garrison and Abend without throwing Richard Collins in for good measure? He's the biggest dork of them all. They've turned into a pretty crappy rag, IMHO.

None

My .02, read whatever is at a library or bookstore every couple of months on a rainy day and save your money for something else. FAR/AIM, POH's, and the like are a better thing to read anyway. Too many 'pilots' are out there saying 'cool Seneca, it does this this and this', but can't land in a crosswind with 80 hours.

I'm a big Penthouse fan. I can read about airplanes at work, the FBOs have plenty of magazines. They don't have any smut though, at FBOs, so gotta buy it myself.

For airline information you might like Flight International out of the U.K.. Kind of expensive, but it's a weekly rag that has all the airline info to keep you up to date on current events. It's every bit as good as AW&ST with more pertinent info on airlines and a good jobs section in back. If you like pictures of airplanes with some limited reading on airlines then there are two mags, one out of the U.K. and another out of the States. www.airlinerworld.com and www.airwaysmag.com . You might also try www.justplanes.com for good airline news.

Sometimes FI has sweatheart deals at airshows. At the Dubai airshow they had a three year deal for $179.00. That works out to just over $1.00 per issue with postage from the U.K. included. Wonder if they go to Oshkosh ? I end up trading a Swedish friend my FIs, AOPA Pilot, Sport Aerobatics, and Sport Aviation for all the mags he buys, which usually include Airways and Airliner World as well as some pubs out of Oz and even Flying ( since I wouldn't personally buy it ).

I'm a member of and read AOPA and EAA mags.

I usually toss ALPA's mag along with the rest of my ALPA mail as soon as I get it.

Stopped Aviation Week S&T and just stop off at the library every other week to read it now along with Flight History and Air and Space Smithsonian. I go to Boarders to look at Airways and Flight International.

Used to read ProPilot but they stoped sending it to me so thats that.

I like AIN but don't get the subscription. I also like NTSB reporter and IFR refresher but also cx the subscription.

I find that I get the best info from this site and other web sites, but you have to learn to weed out the BS.

I know it sounds like I'm cheep but I'm 6 months into a 2.5 year plan to save for an airplane and downpayment on a house.

Air and Space Smithsonian, and Flight Journal.

For General Aviation, AOPA mag seems to be OK. They usually have a variety of articles pertaining to different levels/skills of flying. Since it is a GA mag, mostly pertains to that audience.

If your profile is current, would say Flight Training is a pretty good mag for newbies. It has been years ago, but thought it was good reading for a "beginner".

I hope this isn't "sacreligious" to point out another web site, but Avweb has a variety of articles written by an assortment of aviators that usually contain pretty good info. Haven't read them in a while but I think it was under the columns section.

I subscribe to Business/Commercial Aviation my McGraw Hill.

It's a good read if your into corporate aviation, and corporate aircraft. It has a lot of articles on airmanship, and various subjects to help make you a better pilot - from the perspective that your already a career pilot. I've learned quite a bit from them, and its always a fun read to take long on trips.

Pacific Flyer....it is not a glossy, but it is the best rag out there.

Hi cforst,

I have to agree with most of the others. Flying has gone downhill since about the late 80's. Bax and Morgan are gone, and they were only decent read in there. If you are a dude with more money in your pocket then you know what to do with, and just have to know how the latest Citation, Lear, Challeger or TBM flys, then it's probably a good read.

I prefer AOPA's mag. Free with the membership, readable articles and nice pictures.

Some of the local, home grown mags/newspapers are pretty decent, like Southern Aviator.

Aviation Leak and Spy Technology is VERY spendy. It's interesting for its military and space news, but the airline news is biased off the scale pro-management. Most of the space news you can find on the net, like at www.spaceflightnow.com . Flight Internation is a better bet...same news, but more evenhanded, and the editorial quality is higher, IMHO. If it's one thing the Brits know how to do, and thats write about airplanes.

IFR is the best flying mag out there...not color, but articles that will save your ass. And the "heard on the airwaves" thing on the back is always funny...

I agree. Also, it doesn't have all the crap that flying and p&p has.

I get all the usual. If you fly professionally, you can get Business & Commerical Avaition and Pro pilot for FREE. I also get Dirt Rider and MotoCross Action.

Tony, is that a Husky in you avatar?

Not really pertinant to the original question, but for Cessna owners, I was really impressed with the Cessna Pilots Association mag and web site when I joined. Exceeded my expectations quite a bit. More for the maintenance stuff than anything else. Lots of tips and technical info, product reviews, and priceless stuff on how to avoid costly maint mistakes...

Its a Suzuki
05 RM250
Its the Team Off-Road graphics.

You have got to get cycle news. They always have good write ups

Tony, I used to work at a KTM/Husky dealer in LBB, Tx. I read cycle News all the time when I was there. Great Mag for motorcycling.

I would like to get an '05 250 or 450 SX. However, I currently work in a 91 Corp dept and we are flying like mad these days and it would be unfair to the other guys if I got hurt. As you know it, is not a matter of if you crash, but, when.

Ride fast and have fun, some day I'll get back to it!

If you are the thrifty type or just like to be well organized, a pouch to carry your magazines neatly is the tidy way to go...

MAGAZINE POUCH

This can be worn on your belt and if you wear two, one on each hip, you'll have plenty of reading material for on the road or wherever.

Magazines Sold Separately.
