FMS? Bwa ha ha ha!
Yes, MAC is getting rid of their F-27's. They've already brought some ATR's on line. As for their F-27's, the Old Malasian, Old French and New French models had a GPS unit on board. No autopilot. Their newer Air Wisconsin models had good ol /A nav equipment, no GPS. The reason for this? They have an autopilot.
In their infinite wisdom, FedEX decided that the newer airplanes don't need a GPS, because the GPS is only there as an altitude alert system; since they had an autopilot, they didn't need the altitude alert. Since the older models had no autopilot, they needed the GPS to alert us when we strayed off altitude.
Don't know what the ATR's have- I left just as they started coming on board, but I would highly doubt that they have any kind of FMS on board, unless you happen to bring a whiz-wheel with you. But I understand they have both an autopilot and a GPS unit.
Too bad, though. The F-27 was a blast to fly- I had no fear of thunderboomers. Can't say that about my new platform...
