Anybody know what type of navigation equipment MAC is using on their F27's and ATR's? I just looking to eventually getting some experience with FMS or newer and was curious about MAC. Are they keeping their F27's? I heard that Empire is getting rid of them.

I imagine that they will probably keep a couple of them flying for awhile. I heard that FedEx plans to keep at least a few of them flying at Empire for more than a year from now. I would venture to guess that the situation is similar at MAC. I imagine this is due to the fact of the costly t2cas conversions that had to be done due to the fact that the ATRs are slower coming on line than anticipated. I'll be sad to see them go. They are an obnoxious loud underpowered airplane, but they will take care of you in the ice and when the weather goes poo.

FMS? Bwa ha ha ha!

Yes, MAC is getting rid of their F-27's. They've already brought some ATR's on line. As for their F-27's, the Old Malasian, Old French and New French models had a GPS unit on board. No autopilot. Their newer Air Wisconsin models had good ol /A nav equipment, no GPS. The reason for this? They have an autopilot.

In their infinite wisdom, FedEX decided that the newer airplanes don't need a GPS, because the GPS is only there as an altitude alert system; since they had an autopilot, they didn't need the altitude alert. Since the older models had no autopilot, they needed the GPS to alert us when we strayed off altitude.

Don't know what the ATR's have- I left just as they started coming on board, but I would highly doubt that they have any kind of FMS on board, unless you happen to bring a whiz-wheel with you. But I understand they have both an autopilot and a GPS unit.

Too bad, though. The F-27 was a blast to fly- I had no fear of thunderboomers. Can't say that about my new platform...

If MAC is like us, some of the ATR's have FMS. In our companys wisdom they are taking them out. We are putting the old GPS from the fokkers in the ATR however. And they are leaving the autopilot also.
