Southwest adds charge to board sooner

(09-02) 05:15 PDT DALLAS, (AP) --

Southwest Airlines is starting to charge some customers to be able to board aircraft sooner.

The Dallas-based discount carrier said Wednesday that for an extra $10 each way Southwest passengers can automatically reserve a boarding position prior to general check-in. That would allow those customers to begin boarding the plane after certain elite fliers, who don't have to pay add-on fees for early boarding privileges.

Unlike other carriers, Southwest does not offer assigned seating.

The new offering, which can be purchased up to 25 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of the customer's flight, was available for purchase starting Wednesday for travel beginning Thursday.

I thought that was called Business select ???

Business select cost $15 more than the the full fare ticket. Maybe you can pay $10 more than the "wanna get away" price and board right after the business select. For example, you can buy a wanna get away ticket from LAX to PHX next month for $49, but a business select ticket costs $172. Maybe this new program will allow you to pay $59 to board sooner.

A1-A15 have been noticeably empty. presumably this is a way to cut in line without getting the other BS things (free drink, extra rapid reward credits)

I hope so. We're leaving millions on the table every quarter without a noticable increase in yield or demand.

Gup

Will there be some cute ad campaign that makes fun of the fact that SWA made fun of the other airlines for adding fees and such, and now they have joined them?

Climb2slow or react to soon however you want it here's your word for the day.
