I met a Continental pilot that lives in my apartment complex. I told him I was working on my commercial certificate and he said I should start applying to airlines as soon as I get it because he had a buddy that just got on at ASA with around 250 TT and hardly any multi. He said if I wait to meet the mins before applying, I'll be wasting time. Has anyone heard of anything like this? Was he yanking my chain?

I think those low time people usually have internships or agreed upon interviews through their flight academy.

Hi!

If you have your commerical-multi-engine, apply.

TSA, Eagle, Colgan, Mesa, Pinnacle, etc., etc. are hiring guys with a commerical and as little as 10 ME. They're not even coming CLOSE to filling their classes even with these low mins. I recently read some regional mgmt types are thinking of starting Ab-Initio programs, where they hire guys with 0 time!!!

Just saw a ad in Professional Pilot magazine for eagle pilot positions? WTF

The pilot shortage is real. Minimum times to apply have been dropping like rocks at the regionals over the past few years.

There is not, never was, and never will be a pilot shortage like you mentioned. However, a shortage of qualified applicants is a term that is more fitting for what you are referring to. Had a mentor/former United pilot get hired at UAL in 1966 at age 26 with like 1500 hrs flying time or something like that.
