There is not, never was, and never will be a pilot shortage like you mentioned. However, a shortage of qualified applicants is a term that is more fitting for what you are referring to. Had a mentor/former United pilot get hired at UAL in 1966 at age 26 with like 1500 hrs flying time or something like that.

Flightjock is correct. There are plenty of highly qualified pilots out there who absolutely REFUSE to apply for a regional job that pays peanuts for the first few years. However, this has opened opportunities for low-timers who can somehow manage to survive the food-stamp wages until they can get some seniority.

West Houston, there is plenty of opportunity at the regionals, but do watch out for the pitfalls and make certain that is what you really want to do with your aviation career before you make a long-term commitment to a regional airline.

Many of the major airlines recruited in high schools in the early '60s. If found out that NWA actually hired applicants who had "0" time.
