OK. I think I'm starting to make up my own regs and recommendations.

Maybe someone can help me out.

Where would I have come up with this? I have been teaching my primary students (in the past 6 months) that they MUST read back all Taxi, Hold Short, Takeoff and Landing clearances.

I find only ONE (Hold Short) in the regs. Some recent publications by the FAA's ASF reads "read back landing clearances". "read back takeoff clearances". But why am I conviced I've been taught this and that I was teaching it as a CFI three years ago?

Could this have been drilled into my head through my 121 training? I know we were required to read back these clearances at BOTH airlines I worked for. Just part of our SOP for the CVRs.

Or have I lost my mind?

(After spending a few hours in the FARs and AIM trying to prove this to myself, I've finally given up and decided to accept that I've got Alsheimer's. )

Also: DOes anyone think that a DE who seems annoyed when your student is reading back clearances (because you've recommended it in the interests of safety as "acknowledge and confirm") instead of just giving the call sign - is missing the point?

Or am I out of line for trying to form a habit that may save someone's life or certs - even if it adds a second or two to the transmission?

Someone please straighten my as$ out. I'm having a blonde day here.

Thanks

I would say so. I always read back everything (especially clearances) except in a crunch.

I was always taught that the only thing required to be read back (unless a controller asks for more) is hold shorts.

Anything more depends on the pilot.

I read back all clearences, I feel this is a good operating practice in that if there is a misunderstanding, it should help clear the problem up. better safe than sorry in my opinion

I have always been told that you read back pertinent information. ie heading, runway, freq, squak, alt, further time and clearances.

AIM 5-5-2 says that pilots 'must readback any hold short of runway instructions issued by ATC.'

However it also says that controllers must ensure 'that readbacks by the pilot of altitude, heading, or other items are correct. If incorrect, distorted, or incomplete, makes corrections as appropriate. '

So basically if you readback something in error and the controller doesn't catch it, it's the controllers fault; if the pilot choses not to read something back and messes it up, it's the pilot's fault.

However it's good operating practice of course to always read back the important information in all clearances for safety.
