Where in the FARs does it say that Simulator time can't be logged under TT? Thanks.

It doesn't and it can be logged as TT.

Before this turns into a long, drawn-out argument, do a search and you'll be able to make the decision for yourself based on the arguments and citations of the threads.

BS. Look under 61.51 "pilot logbooks". Then look up the definition of "flight time" under Part 1.

The only way you can count simulator or flight training device time is that which is necessary to meet the requirements of a certificate or rating.

Simultor time is NOT flight time....it's plain ans simple in black and white under Part 1, and if you are logging it as such and counting it as Total Time, you had better have a good explanation when someone (such as a pilot interviewer) asks you about it.

Thanks, I haven't logged it as TT up to this point, and never intend to.:D

It really wouldn't matter even IF you could log sim as TT.

There are very few employers that would consider it as TT.

So, since nobody considers it to be TT, if you log it like that you end up with nothing but a number you will have to chop down to fill out an app at an airline.

Just because sim can often be used INSTEAD of TT (to meet FAR req's), does not mean it IS TT.

Whoa. There are a number of different defintions here. And "total time" =isn't= one of them.

"Total Time" isn't really defined in the FAR. When the term is used, it's not alone. For example, the 61.159 aeronautical experience requirements for the ATP include "at least 1,500 hours of total time as a pilot" So there's really no such thing as "TT" standing by itself.

There is, however, a definite difference between "pilot time" and "flight time"

"Pilot time" is defined in 61.1(b) specifically includes simulator time.
==============================
that time in which a person -
(i) Serves as a required pilot flight crewmember;
(ii) Receives training from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device; or
(iii) Gives training as an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device.
==============================

On the other hand, "flight time" is defined in FAR 1 as
==============================
Pilot time that commences when an aircraft moves under its own power for the purpose of flight and ends when the aircraft comes to rest after landing; or
==============================
which clearly excludes simulators (however good they are, simulators are not aircraft)

The logbooks I've seen don't have a column for "total time". They do have a column for total "flight" time and sim time doesn't belong there. Want to trach total pilot time? Add a column and go ahead. It counts for something.

An instructor who works with me said his Dad ( who flies for American Airlines) told him to not only log all simulator time but also keep a log of instruction given to others in a simulator because at American they considered that time as valuable instruction experience.

No one is saying not to log simulator time. Just that you log it properly. Log it as "simulator or flight training device" time, or "dual given", or "simulated instrument", etc. However, it is NOT "flight time", therefore should not be logged as total time or PIC or SIC or MEL, etc.

This subject has been hashed and re-hased so many times on this forum, simply do a search and you will get every imaginable opinion from every possible perspective and point of view. Why this question continues to get asked is beyond me.

The only way I would log sim time as "FLIGHT" Time is if an F5 Tornado ripped the simulator of the ground and whizzed it into the air. I would then log the time I was whizzing thru the air as "Flight" Time.
