i have two friends with planes, one own a Comanche 250, the other is just about to finalize the purchase of a Mooney...my question is this, how is it looked upon if you do alot of flying in these two planes, building hours. i have been told that some interviewers aren't thrilled because you don't "work" for the time (not flying as an employee). this isn't multi time but it would help some...just throw any suggestons out there...

also can you log safety pilot time as PIC, i was told by a CFI that you can because you are in charge of the safety of the flight or something...comments please...

Hours for the sake of hours is worthless. A 10,000 hour pilot whose only flown around the farm for years has very little experience compared to someone who only has 500 hours but has gone to various airports, flown single pilot IFR, etc.

You need 1200 hours before you can really earn your hours anyway (pt. 135 IFR work) so how else are you supposed to aquire them?

My advise to you....go fly! Go places you've always wanted to go. File IFR whenever possible (assuming your rated as such) and get as much exposure to the system as possible. Good instrument skills will pay dividends when the time comes for you to get one of those paid jobs!

As for safety pilot time, yes, you may log all the time the other pilot is under the hood as PIC. Remember, that means you can't log the total time because your friend won't be wearing the hood while taking-off and landing. You also need to place in the remarks section of your logbook who you were safety pilot for. You cannot however log the approach for currency. You need to be the one under the hood to do that.

Go fly! I wish I had that opportunity when I was timebuilding!

Put another way, have you logged a thousand hours? Or have you logged the same hour a thousand times? (I think I read that in Flying once...maybe in a Robert Buck column.)
