I am interested in finding out about living in Las Vegas. I have been to Sin City maybe ten times, and enjoyed every bit of the Strip and the Casino's. I have heard that it is the place to go if you want to drink yourself to death, but so is any Chuckie Cheese{don't they fly a GV}.
Anyone ever lived and worked out of KLAS? I know about the Strip enough, but don't have a clue what lies beyond. Apparently it is the fastest growing city in the US, and has the highest property values currently.

How much is the cost of living? This is the area I am mainly concerned about.

Is there an area of town that the younger yuppie crowd prefers?

What area of town is best to stay away from the Hip Hop gangsters from San Berdidino that we all love so much?

Is there a lot to do besides hookers and hangover's?

I like playing online poker, anyone that has lived there ever experienced problems with compulsion in the Casino?

Is it true you will die from a STD 86% of the time living there?

Are there a large number of Gold Diggers there, as in South Florida?

Is there any good hunting in the area? or fishing(fly, or conventional, or dynamite)?

What about snow skiing? Is it a short drive to Heavenly, or Big Bear, or Mammoth?

I am just trying to get a general idea about the city outside of the city. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. I have tried searching on google and after reaching the last O of the search came up with nothing more than what a $20 trick is.

Higher than it used to be. Not as high as it will be in 5 years. City is growing way too rapidly for my tastes(that's why I don't live there now!).

Real estate has increased an average of 70% in the past year. More than 125% in the past 5. I think it's just because everybody is brain dead from the heat in the summer. The winters are awesome, though.

Is there an area of town that the younger yuppie crowd prefers?

Seems to be all areas now.

Seriously, though...it seems to change year to year. Call a real estate agent there and ask. There are a few guys on this board that live there...hopefully one of them will chime in with the better areas.

What area of town is best to stay away from the Hip Hop gangsters from San Berdidino that we all love so much?

The further from the Strip, the better.

Is there a lot to do besides hookers and hangover's?

You mean there's something else?

Dude...it's a big city....similar to most big cities, except there are tons of tourists there. Hmm...maybe like ALL other big cities, then. Anyways, there's plenty to do. Do you like rock climbing? Hiking? Mountain biking? Kayaking?

I knew a few. If you have an addictive personality, maybe Vegas isn't the place for you....either that, or you need to find something to become addicted to that's not as harmful to your financial situation. Try skydiving. Not Skydive Las Vegas. Avoid that place like the plague. The owner is a pr!ck.

Depends on which addictions you pick up.

Are there a large number of Gold Diggers there, as in South Florida?

Probably not as many as South Florida...but lots of them. Most with 2 or 3 kids. The dating scene there sucked. Seemed about 75%+ of them had serious baggage. Others were too immature for me....and THAT is saying a lot!

Is there any good hunting in the area? or fishing(fly, or conventional, or dynamite)?

Only with hand grenades. Pineapple style only, though.

What about snow skiing? Is it a short drive to Heavenly, or Big Bear, or Mammoth?

Big Bear is the closest...about 3.5-4hrs. Not that Big Bear is awesome skiing, by any means.....but it'll do in a pinch. The others are twice as long, at least. If you're flying, Mammoth is probably the closest.

How long does it take to drive to LA from Las Vegas?

Do you drive like a blind old man, or a blind old woman? Depending on that, about 3.5 to 8 hours. In peak traffic times, 3.5 to 6 hours is realistic.

Hope I could be of some help. I'm sure I'm not....because I'm pretty well liquored up and pissed off at this point. My date had to work til 2300. Her boss sucks. We were supposed to go out at 1900. Good thing she's driving...I started drinking at noon.

Vegas

Hanging out here Vegas for the past month waiting for my regional groundschool in my Mom's place. From what I can tell the younger crowd is centered around Henderson and Summerlin areas on the south and west side of LV. The more shoddy areas that I can tell are near the strip and north/northeast towards Nellis AFB. Overall it's a pretty awesome place to live if you can survive the August heat. Living most of my life in the DC area my cost of living opinion is very warped, but I can tell you it's much less than there. Compared to back east the weather in unbelievable! LA is a four hour drive, I've only done it once, I was amazed there were only like 2 places to gas up between the two, sure wouldnt want to break down out there! As far as hunting, I'm not sure, I know there is one place you can shoot paintballs at naked women in the desert but I'm not sure if they are still doing that LOL! Most all of the fishing is done at Lake Meade or the Colorado River below Hoover Dam (Stripers, Bass, Panfish, I think stocked trout). Skiing is available at Mount Charleston about an hour away.

Cost of living is very affordable. Housing has gone up quite a bit over the last few years, but low property tax and no income tax makes a big difference. If you're looking to rent, the cost of renting is pretty cheap.

Yes and no.. The north west side of town (summerlin) is very nice but is made up of mainly retired people and the very rich. The south west side (Spring Valley) in and around Rhodes Ranch is probably where you're going to want to look if you're looking for the younger crowd. My development is primarily early 30s with a mix of kids and no kids. The Green Valley area is also a very nice area and is sorta made up of the younger crowd.

Stay away from North Las Vegas (Nellis area). Any gang activity in the city is up there and isn't very nice. They are modernizing the area and should be nice in a couple years. I would also stay away from Henderson. It's also an older part of town and has a very old look to most of it.

There is so much more to Las Vegas than casinos and drinking. We have a very nice ski resort 30 minutes from town. You can go hiking in Red Rock Canyon or do the same things you do in any other city. Every concert comes through town and you have tons of places to people watch if you're into that.

I'm a party poker junkie. I've lived in Vegas almost 3 years now and hardly ever go into a casino. There really is so much to do that casinos aren't an issue.

That depends on you. Last I heard, only 1 girl from the houses in the last 5 years has tested positive for anything.

Mt. Charleston... 30 minutes away with 4 or 5 runs. Plenty of snow and all real.

Again, depends on you. It's 275 miles. I've done it in 3 hours a few times but it's usually a 4 hour drive.

Las Vegas is a great city with plenty to do. I don't think I can ever get enough of that city no matter how many times I frequent the place in a month or in a year. Turnberry Place is a very nice complex with superb living accommodations if you want to pay a little for it. Right off of Paradise which is close to everything there. (if only I could meet some rich broad)

Back down to a normal person's level, cost of living depends on what you are looking for.. You can spend very little or very much (as evident in the above) depending on what type of place and area that you are wanting to live in.

Depending on the day of the week and the time of the day this will vary, I have done it in as little as 3h/20 minutes and it has taken as long as 5.5 hours.

Laughlin is a short drive Vegas and offers a lot to do. A pretty good escape from the tourists and the strip. You can rent wave runners and have a lot of fun on the Colorado.

So much to do it is impossible to list but some of my favorite golf courses are there in Las Vegas. The night life is superb and fantastic not to mention the great food that can be had on any day of the week.

That is a good question since in reality if you go a block or two off of the strip in either direction then you are in some pretty bad company. Best thing to do is stay in the populated areas when the lights go down. As much money and wealth that can be found in Vegas the same can be said for the homeless, thugs, drug addicts, etc. It can and is very dangerous in certain parts of the city.

I was just in Henderson and there really nice areas.Also a nice area is Green Valley.The summer is the worse time but its not as hot as Phoenix.

I've lived in Las Vegas four times now while working for several different employers. The one thing that the city could use is to be melted by a giant mean kid with a really big magnifying glass. I hate that place more than I hate my ex mother in law, and that's scarcely possible.

The only redeeming thing I ever found in las vegas (aside from the Children's museum and the museum of natural history) was a single decent aikido dojo. Aside from that, the city should be burned.

Just thinking about the place makes me want to vomit.
When I get the taste out of my mouth, of course I'll tell you how I really feel.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I am guessing Spring Valley is the best place to start my lookie.

Any ideas about the more trendy parts of town? Is this Spring Valley. Sumerlin sounds like a date with Judge Schmells. Henderson sounds like a rustic boring place with trailer parks. I have heard differently though.

What is the best place to live to get to the airport easily, stay away from the strip, and has good shopping in the area?

Turnberry looks nice, but I don't have credit for a 512000 townhouse by the strip? Any other ideas for younger community living residents, that are nice and new?

How about a nice townhouse? What can I expect to pay?

I spent a ton of time in Vegas during my Part 135 days, and was never impressed. Dirty, gritty town with a lot of crime...and the most hicks you'll find this side of Alabama. Of course, that's probably because I flew into VGT and spent most of the time nearby in North Las Vegas. Twice, I was walking and had cops jump me and search me because I matched the description of somebody they were looking for (and I'm the ultra-white, clean-cut type, mind you...)

I have a cousin that lives in Henderson and he likes it down there.

Don't rule out henderson...

...there has been a lot of construction and new housing. It is close to the airport, shopping and lakes.

Condos from around 200K and up. Expect to pay about 250K. Also check SE of KLAS and I-15.

Not all the homes/townhomes are in/at the golf course. The area is in the middle end of construction. I can make the airport in about 7 minutes and plenty of shopping all around.

If you're looking at something cheaper, a new condo development just opened called Copper Sands. It's on Flamingo and Buffalo area of Spring Valley. Condos start in the low 100s there. Nice area as well.

Is all of Green Valley expensive.I tried to look at those million dollar homes right off of 15 and trying to get in is impossible.That gate is bigger then my house.

No, not all of Green Valley is expensive. There are some very nice homes (Spanish Oaks) in the area though.
