The RJ boom undoubtely happended after Sept 11. They were merely place holders to keep market share from eroding. The mainline parked numerous ineffieint older 737, DC-9's etc. Remainig larger airframes were re-deployed to develop new routes while maintaining previous market share with RJ's. Now that the economics of 50 seaters has made them unproftiable, they want to upgrade to 70-90 seats jets. If major airline managment had thier way, they would outsource the entire operation and become more like a franchise.
I truly believe the 50 seat RJ will exist for some time to come, just in much smaller numbers. The Regional airline boon has been on the decline. The only thing stopping the Regionall Airline growth into bigger equipment is SCOPE.
