Letters of Recommendation

Hey Folks, I'm new here.

I was browsing through several threads and reading about how so many of you included letters of rec. from test pilots, retired colonels, etc. I was wondering how you were able to obtain them? Do you know them personally? Do you just write to them, explain your situation and ask them to write you a letter?
