Coupled with this news, I think things are about to get real ugly at AMR. To bad the eagle pilots can't strike over this screw job on letter 3. But even if they could, Bush would stop it. Perhaps 2100 resignations would do the trick. But everyone knows there would be 2100 furloghed AA and 10,000 other pilots waiting to take the Eagle jobs. Sad!

AMR's American Airlines, the world's biggest airline, on Tuesday said it was poised for a shake-up in its routes and US hub airports, suggesting that it is finally engaging in a far deeper restructuring to restore profitability.

Gerard Arpey, chief executive who replaced Don Carty after he resigned amid outrage over executive pay, said: "The reality is we will not be able to fly every nonstop route we fly today, nor will we be able to provide the same level of service in markets that cannot profitably support our current flight schedule."

The warning suggests that Mr Arpey is starting to unravel many of the changes put in place by his predecessor. The first signs came in May, when American said it intended to pack more seats into its economy class sections, rowing back on its "more room throughout coach" campaign, initiated by Mr Carty.

American said it was reviewing its key routes, the space it occupies at major airports, and "to the structure of its mid-continent hubs at Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and St. Louis."
