I didn't have it particularly hard because I had a pretty good job that covered the cost of my ratings and allowed me to own an airplane.

I had a friend that I flew with at a 135 job that made some big sacrifices though. At one point he was living in NYC, flying part time, working at McDonalds full time, and living in an illegal unheated apartment. And yes it was wintertime. Now that's dedication.
