I saw him once on an overnite in Birmingham, UK, eating breakfast. Just sitting there eating eggs he was funny. I wanted to walk by and make some sort of "shirley you cant be serious" joke, but I decided to let him eat in peace. May he rest in it. Peace, not eggs.
The last thing he said to me, "Doc," he said, "some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Doc," he said, "but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."
"I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you."
I have you used that quote so many times in phone calls and ACARS messages. May he rest in eggs...or peace. Either way, the world is a lot less funny this morning.
He taught my wife to never use the term "surely" in my presence. She preemptively kicked me under the table at a real estate closing as a warning when the lawyer said "surely."
