Wing loading, G's, parasite drag, etc...Got to pitch up to keep height, but speed will drop...Add power I'd say.

Making any kind of radar-vector turn in a loaded B-747 ya need to add a heavy hand of power to keep the speed on the bug, once wings are-a-level, pull the power way back.

Same thing go for any kind of fixed wing craft I have ever flown.

Good luck.

I disagree..

Wing loading should be much less of a factor during the initial pitch up, and during the pitch down phase, the angle of bank is being reduced.

Parasite drag is reduced during the pitch up because it is a function of airspeed, which is also being reduced

The point of this maneuver is not to add power to sustain a climb, or hold a particular airspeed, the power setting should remain constant.

Remember there are 4 pitch phases (nose up-45, nose level-90, nose down-135, nose level-180) and at no time is the pitch held at a constant angle.

If you were to add power it would result in each lazy 8 ending higher than the last.

I think it's a function of AOA. As you're climbing, AOA is being increased as you're decelerating, thus making for a higher pitch attitude. When you're descending and accelerating, the AOA is being reduced, thus the pitch attitude isn't going to be as drastic.

I dunno. I could be wrong. I don't have any commercial students, so I'm probably pretty rusty on all of these commercial maneuvers. I'll ask around.

Yeah, disregard my previous post. Have not done a Lazy 8 since 1979 and misunderstood the maneuver/post during a beer induced haze last night.....

A lazy 8 is a manuever that demonstrates mastery of the aircraft in pitch, yaw, and roll control. Since they are all constantly changing. At no point should the power be changed. Moreover, the only time parasite drag will increase is between the 90 and the 135 points. Induced drag will be the 0 to 90 degree point as it is a function of increased aoa and low airspeed. I love lazy 8's especially when the bank limitation is removed. 90 degree bank lazy8's very fun. Also on the left hand side of the lazy 8 the increased pitch and p-factor helps to pull you through the manuever.
