Just got call from one of our former pilots at Spirit, who is going to be laid off Feb 1st, said about 24 piltos will be let go. Said they are getting out of the DC-9 business.

I don't understand. Do you mean a straight layoff or furlough or what? If a pilot at Spirit is on the DC-9 wouldn't they just transition to the 80? I have a hard time believing they would just lay pilots off for that reason.

JUST A GUESS BUT.........

I bet it also (besides getting out of the 9 biz) has something to do with the ongoing contract talks. I also think this is why the mangmnt. keeps dangling the Airbus or 737 order stuff in the pilots' faces. Just my opinion/thoughts

Take Care

I too have a couple of buddies over there and feel bad for them........ hmmmmm I wonder if they flew people around the U.S again for free then they wouldn't have to furlough any guys. Except, they better fly people around for free for a whole week instead of one day...... you know.... cause people are so afraid to fly now a days...... what a joke!!!!! Where do these CEO's come from? Just from the revenue lost on that one day of free flights, they could have employed the whopping 24 pilots they're going to furlough for another couple of months.

I have a friend their that sent me a picture of a brand-new A320 painted in Spirit colors... Could be they're just selling off the 9's in order to put deposits on more A320's. A similar transaction took place at Miami Air where they sold some 727's to acquire another B737-800. It caused a layoff of about 20 or so crews... In Spirit's case as in Miami Air's, they are Union, so company will have to furlough by seniority, if at all.

here's a uplifting SPIRT story...

I never met the guy, but my co-workers mention him all the time...his initials are F.L. He left the cargo caravans for Spirit airlines...eventually made Capt there. Then left Spirit for Midwest Express. Post 9/11 he was furoughed from MidEx...then bought a 737 type (out of his own pocket, I heard) to get in the pool at SWA. Eventually had to take an F.O. postion back at SPIRIT and is just now being laid off/furloughed from there.

Why in the H.ell would anyone leave Spirit for Midwest Express???

They both fly similar equipment and are both about the same size. Midwest Express might pay a little more, but Fort Lauderdale or Milwaukee, come on!

It has everything to do with the contract talks. The CP and guy in charge of scheduling think that the staffing is where it should be. Apparently they will not have enough pilots to cover the schedule once they award vacations. Expect another meltdown soon. I bet the furlough doesn't last more than 30 - 45 days. But I dunno I could be wrong.

I see, with 2000 hours you must know everything about this industry......you had to be there.
