LAX-Cabo jumpseat on UA

Have a buddy that is looking to jump from LAX to Cabo this weekend.
He is with SWA, but isn't a huge fan of online info.
Can he just walk up to the gate and request a seat in the back by filling out the form, assuming his cass checks out?
I realize, he can probably zed.
