Last week we were going JFK - LAS with little to do but watch the scenery across the midwest. Then a Southwest comes on the air and declares an emergency, asking for vectors to St. Louis. The controller complies, then deals with a couple other people. The captain and I sit up and turn the volume up a little, glad for the change from humdrum. About a minute later the controller comes back on and asks the usual questions about the status of the emergency and souls on board. In what is now an obviously disgusted voice the SWA pilot replies: "Yes, we are declaring an emergency and diverting. We have a load of old people from Florida onboard and all the lavs have gone inop. We're landing in St. Louis."
Not sure why they called it an emergency, but the Captain and I were laughing the rest of the way across the country. Thanks for the entertainment SWA!
