Did a search but most posts are pretty old. Anyone been to MMUN recently? Any advice for a noob? Never been to Mexico nor over enough water to require a raft.

get a handling company. You'll need Mexican insurance, permits...etc and help with the paper work.

If you haven't flown an international trip in a while it would be a good idea to brush up on those ops. Don't forget APIS. If you need help, spend a little bit of money and have Universal set it up for you. If you have a last minute change in passengers Universal is exceptional in helping you fix the pax issue last minute. Universal can be custom made to order. If all you want is APIS filing they can do that. If you don't want the whole Universal experience, you can pick and choose what you want.

Good Luck!

PS make sure you hit a Foam Dance Pit in Cancun, especially if you are over 40, anyone over 40 just loves a good Foaming!

Avoid the Roofie cocktails!

What kind of plane is it? When is the trip? Now the ramp is not that crowded, but November thru March it is packed (winter rich folks who come down). Use a handler. Cancun is kinda high maintenance if you just show up on the ramp from international location. Make sure your passports, etc are up to date. Etc typical stuff.

Wear your smile and be patient.

560XL over Turkey Day. Thanks for all the replies. Should be mostly straight forward I figure.

Ok use a handler. Turkey Day ramp will be packed. I would get with Universal or whoever about a month before the trip. Remember MMUN is a popular spot internationally, you will have Canada biz-jets and even people from Europe who visit.

Besides that enjoy, MMUN is great place, you will like it. Lots of corporate/private Jet-A traffic, they will treat you well. Straight forward. Get your hotel(s) reserved a month or two out, MMUN is popular place.

Be prepared for departure delays of up to 3 hours that time of year. The airport gets saturated as well as the airspace over the gulf.

Universal now charges around $150 just to quote a trip - which is BS.

Have extra money for tipping those airport folk... it will get things done quicker and sometimes get you out of a bind.

Quit using Universal long ago, if I need help I call Colt now.

While I never had them charge for a quote....they are ridiculous and have very mediocre service...trips that Universal quotes 25k for we can do for 5k.

yep, universal is not what they use to be. I have been very disappointed with them and can no longer recommend their service.

So is it unanimous? Colt is the way to go?

Fortunately we don't go to Cancun, but I have heard that the fbo there will take care of the paperwork for you if you call them.

As for Colt, I have used them for trips to Latin Amer destinations that are new to us and have never had a problem. I think they charge about $160 for setting up a trip on top of the handlers fees and weather flight plans etc. are extra. I have never been charged for estimating trip charges either.

Cancun FBO will set you up with customs in and out of Mexico, but the US they won't.

Even if you use a handler, I suggest you know what they are supposed to be doing. They do a lot of trips and it is easy for them to miss a small, yet very important piece of paperwork. I would also suggest fueling as early as possible. Getting fuel in Mexico can be time consuming. Best to get it when you land if at all possible.

Do a google search on Private Flyers Guide to US Customs.

...eAPIS allowing you to store pax info yet? .....entering that info is so time-consuming

ditto on the fueling, get it after you land. If pax agree try for a 10PM+ departure, assuming US Customs is going to be open when you land. In November you won't have the typical WX issues (T-Storms, etc) to deal with. Also a Tuesday or Wednesday arrival and/or departure will help mitigate some of the delays.
