I know that this is about 1000 items away from the most important impact of Katrina, but:

As I was reminded in this forum earlier, the Michoud assembly facility is located in the New Orleans area. This is the plant where the Space Shuttle External Tanks are constructed. Additionally, the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, where the Space Shuttle Main Engines are tested, was affected by the hurricane. The plants weren't severely damaged, but it looks like this hurricane will have a rather adverse impact on the next flight of the shuttle.

The space shuttle has so many problems, that in my opinion, and people a lot smarter than me, that it should be grounded now and start spending the money on another system.
