To pay or not to pay?
Had the opportunity to pay for training a few times, but declined.
I was unemployed in 1991 with a bunch of folks on the street after Pan Am, Eastern, Rosenbaulm and others went out of busiiness.
Applied for work all over and got a call from Arrow Air...They wanted $10K to put me in DC-8 F/O ground school.
Told 'em I was already qualified, but not current on the 8, it made no difference...The price was firm.
Found out later that several guys I knew signed the dotted line and paid, so as to get heavy time AND a job.
Also got a call from some C-402 outfit, they offered a job, but the training would cost $16K....
What a joke.
Heard from Family Airlines as well....The masters of pay for training.
They were an upstart 747 operator out West....A captain slot would cost $50K..F/O or F/E half that.
I think the first 100 numbers was for pay, after that it would be free training.
Some guys paid up, including a few Pan Am veterans...Sadly the thing folded before it got airborne...Still not sure if that thing was a scam or not.
Yes, there has been hard times before in the aviation business, but quite a few of us have alsways refused to pay and have still managed to put bread on the table....
The secret here is to move to where the jobs are, not sit around yer local airport and wait for a job to fall in yer lap.
I was instructing in Florida in 1981, but found that to be a dead end road.
Bought a one way ticket to Alaska instead and did some CFI work up there, but ended up flying 135 charters pretty soon..First on C-207s for $30.00 per hour, then C-402 for $42.00 per hour and that was good money 23 years ago folks....No pay for training either.
Yes, times has changed, but the point is: Move around, stay single.
If ya get married and start multiplying it will be hard to live in a suitcase and work your way up through the lean years of a civilian flying career.
If ya pay for trainig, ya get no respect from others that actually worked their way up instead of pulling out daddy's Mastercard when times are tough.
If money is burning in yer pocket, go out and get a type rating instead...That is more like investing in yourself and it looks good on the resume: Proved that ya can handle school, simulators and checkrides.
If ya are a low time guy, that could make a difference.
Or take the type rating to the Middle East and fly for some of airlines over there...Some of them prefer the F/Os to be rated. Build time and money instead of PFT.
