Some companies can usually assign you flying on your day off a specified number of times per year. But the catch is that they have to get in touch with you. Usually this will come in the form of an ACARS message, or they'll nail you when you try to check out. Sometimes it comes in the form of them trying to get you to pick up your phone on your day off.

junior manning is getting involuntarily assigned to something. it goes in inverse senority, working from the bottom up.

For vacancy bids, take the CRJ-700 at Comair. Say we get two in October. Let's say that means we need 20 captains and 20 FO's to operate the expanded flights the aircraft will generate. Filling captain slots is not a problem.

But let's say only 10 FO's have filed a bid to move over to the 70. Why? well, it's a small fleet of airplanes, 10 in all, so there's only 100 FO's. the senior FO's can be assured that they'll hold a line. more junior guys aren't so sure. if a few more airplanes get delivered, and more senior guys jump over, they might get pushed back into reserve, so they'd rather stay where they are. So, the bottom 10 trainees get selected involuntarily to be 70 FOs. they'd be on reserve on the 50-seat jet too and first year pay is the same no matter the equipment, so it's not that bad a deal.

as for scheduling, say the weather is really crappy and they've already called out all the reserves. you're coming back from a trip, but instead of being released, they junior-man you into flying an extra assignment. you'll get extra pay, but legally they can fly you until either your flight time or your duty time approaches the FAA limits...

Every airline has a different pay rate for each different scenario.

Every airline has different rules of whether they can take you to the legal FAR limit or into your next day or not.

Bottom line: if you're looking into a specific operator, maybe you should ask it that way 'cause T-Gates and I work under different rules than CaptainV which is probably different than the next guy will post here.
