Junior bases for SWA newbie

SWA Newhire Bases

As a newhire, you can expect to go to Oakland until you get 2 classes behind you. From Oakland, Phoenix, Chicago or Baltimore next, and about the same in seniority, then Orlando, Houston, and Dallas, in that order.

To LuckyDad:

I have another question about OAK as an assigned jr. base if you don't mind. I really appreciate you SWA folks sharing your gouge with us. SWA is the best!
Other than living there, which I imagine not to be the most desirable place, what other factors about OAK make it the most junior base for SWA? Why do most wish to bail out of OAK ASAP? Would there be an advantage to staying with OAK if it were easy to commute/jumpseat there?
I lived in Mountain View for many years and it wasn't too bad other than VERY expensive but there is little comparison with NUQ and OAK.

OAK as a base

I don't know why OAK is such a Jr base, other than having the geographical disadvantage of being all the way on the edge of the country. I live in Houston, so it was a long commute. I know it's real popular with the new-hires that live on the west coast. when I flew out of there, I liked it. It is a good base, with lots of nice folks and the flying was really good. One disadvantage I have heard though is because it is a Jr base, (new-hires get a hard line the first month, when there are classes going through) it takes longer to get a line because the newbys are assigned the open stuff that would normally make up what we call a blank (or vacation relief) line. That's just an opinion I had heard. Because it is a base with alot of commuters, giving away trips can be a little harder than at a base that is heavily populated by pilots. Crash pads are also expensive, or not available, compared to say Chicago, where $120/Mo will get you your own bed a 10 min walk to the airport. Hope this helps... Dad

When I was flying for Ameriflight out of OAK, as strange as it sounds, I had SWA pilots jumpseat with me in a Piper Lance. I was told that OAK is way junior and that around 75% of the base commutes.

I can't remember the hotel name where AMF would put us up in OAK, but I know that numbers of SWA pilots and F/A's would stay there.
